Um...... New London is NOT a safe place at night.

Either my firstie year or just after I graduated they have an "execution style" murder, down near Bank Street.

What's that mean? It means someone forced someone else down to their knees and shot them in the head.

I'm not saying there isn't crime all over.... but I never felt especially safe in the New London area.

Yale is in a pretty horrible location as well. Doesn't mean CGA and Yale aren't great schools. They seem to succeed inspite of Connecticut.

But surely the college campus should be safe...compared to that of a regular university.

I have another question: what do most cadets like to do on weekends, especially during 3 day weekends because of a holiday (Washington's Birthday...etc) Drive up to New York? Fly to another state?

Nobody is saying the Academy Campus itself isn't safe, because it is by far one of the safest places I know. However if you leave base after dark alone, then there is the possibility that you may be inviting trouble. That's all we're saying. A member of the class of 2011 and his girlfriend (a classmate of his) were jumped by three guys while out on a date by the New London train station either last year or the year before (since I've been here). It's just something you have to watch out for.

That being said, most cadets on long weekends tend to go away from the Academy, they stay at a Sponsor Family's house, they take the train to New York, or Boston, or Providence and they go have a good time! If you have duty though, most people tend to stick around base, maybe going out to dinner once and sleeping. Trust me, you will never have enough sleep here, so people tend to take advantage of it when they can. Also, it's good to remember that you're going to be having very little money (4/c pay is 150$/month) so if you want to do things like that, you'll have to be cognizant of the price and save up... either that or make sure your parents are okay with funding your endeavors (mine weren't, so I just saved). It's definitely possible to have a good time though.

On the academy grounds, is there any kind of social hall for the cadets to go and relax and have fun?

Leamy Hall has a lounge (with plasma tv, pool table, etc), Dry Dock cafe, and a bowling alley, making it a popular spot on the weekends.

I would guess that Mr G's or Campus P is about as far as you can safely walk at night down Williams St.

It's pretty safe to walk from the train station to the Academy even at night. You stay on a decently busy road and walk right past a police station. If you go away from the river though you will run into trouble (where my classmates did).
