Navy LREC Program

I still can't believe they changed the application in them middle of the application process. For people like me who submitted their applications around August, there was no checklist or anything asking us if we wanted to specifically apply or to be considered for LREC.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but those who applied a little later were given the option to signify that they wanted to be considered for LREC. Was this a separate question from your selected major? Did checking off the LREC box mean your application could ONLY be considered for LREC and not for any other major?

The reason why I ultimately decided not to select an LREC major was because I was advised that if I selected my major as International Relations or a Foreign Language I could only be considered for that major and not for a Tier 1 or Tier 2. I was told that only 25-35 students per year were selected for LREC and thus, by applying for an LREC major, I was severely limiting my chances at picking up a scholarship. I deemed it to be too large of a gamble.

Can anyone weigh in on this? Perhaps there has been new information since I applied...

They actually did change it midway through the application year. When my son first began filling out the online application in August, it was not there. When he completed in October, it was there.

We were told that the board would look at one's choices for major and determine that that person was interested in the LREC program purely based on their choice of majors.

From all we were told, your choice of a tier 3 major decreases your chances of getting the scholarship. But that does not mean that only those chosen for the LREC program within tier 3 majors will get the scholarship. For example, UVa, my son's first choice school, specifically states on their NROTC web site that 85 percent of their scholarships will go to tier 1 and 2 majors. Well, obviously that means 15 percent go to tier 3. That number is obviously larger than the 35 chosen nationally for LREC.

In the grand scheme of things, my son decided he would rather major in something he was truly interested in, rather than major in something just for the sake of improving his chances to receive the scholarship. To each their own.

I agree with your son on that one however, I am interested in many different fields including Mathematics and Quantitative Economics- which qualify as Tier 2 majors. I figured, since my application doesn't directly ask me if I want LREC, the board at Pensacola can read my application and determine whether I would be of best use to them as a Tier 2 or LREC major.

Like your son, as well as many other applicants who considered LREC, I struggled greatly going back in forth in my mind whether I wanted to commit myself to LREC.

Good luck to your son

I just received a letter in the mail for an LREC NROTC Scholarship for Boston College. Hopefully I can help anyone out if they look this up and find the thread.

The only reason that I was selected was probably for the fact that I was an ISR (Immediate Scholarship Reservation) recipient. For those that do not know, it is very similar to an LOA (Letter of Assurance) for a service academy. The cool thing about ISR is that you will almost assuredly get your first choice school, and your first choice major. I had checked that I was interested in LREC on the application, and that I wanted to major in International Relations. If I am going to be completely honest, I would say that there was a very very slim chance that I would have gotten an LREC without the ISR. The moral of the story is that if you want an LREC, you may want to look into what you need to do to get the ISR.

The ISR is also competitive, but not quite as much as the LREC, and it also has a lot to do with how quickly you get your application turned in. Basically, get the app in as quickly as possible while still ensuring that you have great essays, and all of your information in correctly. Make sure you get your teacher rec's in before summer break of your junior year!

If anyone is interested, you can PM me for some of my "stats" if you would like a good comparison of what you need to get the ISR. Hope this helps!

Thank you! It was really humbling to have been selected for such a great honor.

I listed Boston College, Carnegie Mellon Georgia Tech, Georgetown, then University of Rochester in that order. I am also interested in the Naval Academy, Military Academy, and the Coast Guard Academy though.

I am currently a midshipman at a large midwestern university with a 4 year LREC scholarship. My concentration is Latin America/Spanish. What specific questions do you have? Feel free to PM me.
