Does anyone know if the nomination interviews are ever done via telephone? I'm guessing we would have to travel the 3 hr ride to Anchorage. The roads through the mountains are dangerous in the winter with high risk of avalanches that cover/block the only highway (there was one last week).
Flights are very weather dependent especially in the winter

On the other hand, there is so much lost in a telephone interview vs. in person.

When my DD went to DVP in Feb, there was girl from Kodiak Island. Traveling to Anchorage for her would be extremely expensive.

I also heard that there was a young man from Alaska for class of 2017 who never went for an interview, he was just nominated by MOC on the merit of his paper submission. Is this possible?

I think they're pretty common. My daughter for instance is attending an out of state prep school so all of her nomination interviews are being done over the telephone.

I would re-post this on the NOMS forum. I know you want AFA, but MOCs typically interview all of their candidates for every SA at the same place. IOW by posting on the nom threads you will see insight from those that are applying for USNA, USMA, and USMMA too regarding your question.

I would also remind you that many military members become AK residents for not only tax reasons, but the Permanent Dividend Fund. (We did as ADAF members when stationed at Elmendorf). They could be living in Germany, Korea, California, etc., but in the pool. MOCs would not expect them to travel back for an interview.

I was told at one of the Academies Nights in Anchorage that MOC don't hold interviews in Alaska. The secretary for Don Young's office also confirmed with me that they don't interview, basically for the reasons you listed. They want the kid from Nome to have the same opportunity as someone who goes to Bartlett in Anchorage.

    Unless something has changed.

Here is a thread from last year regarding AK noms

My DS had no interview with either MOC, they just went based on his resume.

My son did not have any interview either. Our congressional representative had lost the election in the previous November and just nominated based upon application package. It seems that almost every Senator and member of Congress does things a little different than others. All you can do is read the fine print on their website and wait for a call/letter. Best wishes. :thumb:
