Nomination types in USNA portal

MOST nom slates are the competitive type. It’s not ‘more positive’. You don’t know the qualifications/interest level/resumes of any of the other slate members. The only type of NOM that is really anything to get excited about is a principal nom as *generally* it will equate to an appointment if USNA deems you fully qualified (USNA is not required to appoint a principal nom, as is the case with USAFA and USMA, but generally does).

There are up to 10 other ‘competitors’ on your child’s slate.
Of course PNom is the best type of Nom. Yes, MOST nom slate are competitive but NOT with our MOC who initially gave rank alternate nom. But coming from rank alternate to competitive is something I was surprised but happy to see. My DS had rank alternate at first from our MOC with X as the number of his rank. Removing X alternate and becoming competitive is personally for me a very positive change and yes I am excited about which I think its ok to be excited since no need to weed off those above him before he gets a chance to compete. He now has equal footing in the "competition".

Maybe yes, maybe no. If he is least qualified on the competitive slate (assuming all are ‘3Q’), but is #1 on on a ranked slate, he presumably had a better chance on the ranked slate.

Just trying to temper expectations and outcomes. There is a lot more to it than how the slate is presented, that we will never know or see. And to have backup plans. Every year, there are posters who look to be ‘for sure’ appointments, who don’t receive one and are caught off guard, and unprepared.

Good luck to him!

Adding this: in past years, USNA didn’t tell candidates in their portal how their MOC’s slates were submitted, if they were principal, or ranked. Is USNA doing this now? In the past, a candidate would have to inquire if the nom source, or *sometimes* their admissions counselor would tell them if asked specifically.

And USNA cannot change how a slate is submitted. If it’s submitted as RANKED, it’s ranked. There are now two posters here speaking to a change in how their nom is listed on their portal this Mornjng. And since ‘ranked or unranked’ are both a subset of a ‘competitive’ nom (see sticky tab), I wonder if this is perhaps only an adjustment in how this is showing on your side of the portal. IOW, perhaps it’s still a ‘ranked COMPETITIVE nom’, that is showing now correctly as ‘competitive’. It actually doesn’t matter in the end. And not for us to know.

If you want to know for sure, as your nominator how they submitted their slate.

My DS is not the PNom so its just a matter of hoping for the NWL if the PNom and those above him (in previous X alternate) gets charged for the MOC. Thus, not sure if the new "Competitive" type means the PNom was removed or its a competitive alternate to the PNom. We don't know the slate for sure and he might get appointment or not. Just sharing this here that somehow some nom types get changed along the way? #stillhoping #stillwaiting

@smokey% - How do you see the console?
If you are on chrome you do ctrl + shift + i

You can also google how to access Java’s script console on chrome.

You go to “my progress” in your USNA portal and then look at the console and it should tell you your nomination type.

I think this is my concern. This is something we have never seen as BGOs. With the type of nom changing I am not sure I ‘trust’ any of it beyond that a nom has been secured. We are just now entering the seas on where the majority of appointments occur. If you see someone at your school, district, etc get an appointment don’t think you are out of the running.

Read the tabbed thread at the top of the forums about nominations for further clarity. But MAKE SURE AND SECURE BACKUP PLANS. ALWAYS.
Back up is already in place for my DS as he was already awarded AFROTC Type 1 HSSP and few admissions on civilian colleges for his engineering course. Whatever the outcome, I think he will be fine with either SA or AFROTC.

Thanks! very encouraging words.

I’m definitely no expert on nominations, but I agree with justdoit19 and NavyHoops on this. Sounds like people are reading into the nomination page source thing a little too much.

Nothing is really certain until you get an appointment, or if you’re specifically told about what “kind” of nomination you have (but it sounds like a nomination is a nomination, and there’s other things you need to achieve to get an appointment) from a reputable source like the congressman. But beyond that, I wouldn’t look too much into what the webpage code says. I’d just relax and wait for an email to come (they send an email for major updates, right?)

This is very interesting! In my USNA portal, my Senator nom type is labeled "competitive".

The console seems to be giving me an error for my USAFA and USMA portals.
My district rep's nom is labeled as competitive, I also received my senator's but it has not shown in the portal as of yet so I'm unsure on that one.

Anyone able to see this on the USMA portal?

My portal is showing first alternate, second alternate, and fourth alternate for my nominations... 🤷‍♀️
Not sure what this means for me lol
