Norwich AFROTC question **HELP**

My DS would be going into his Junior year at Norwich under a Type 3 AFROTC scholarship, and with the additional generous scholarships from Norwich, my out of pocket this year would only be $2500. Trouble is, he has now decided he does not want to go thru with the AF and has filed to dis-enroll without consulting me, three days before his report date. I have rallied friends, his old Scout leaders and family to try and change his mind, but so far have been unable to dissuade him. He has already been awarded scholarships for the 2020 year and is an above average student, so grades are not the issue. He is having anxiety issues he cannot shake, and wants to take time off to "get his head" together. We have already set an appointment with a mental counselor to address his anxiety.

My question is, how will this affect his AFROTC scholarship and/or Norwich scholarship? Would he be able to take a deferment for a semester? What are the repercussions from the AF for dropping out?

Any advise/input would be appreciated.

As far as repercussions from dropping out, he will need to repay all the tuition money he has received. Dont know how it might affect Norwich scholarships... that's a discussion to have with the financial aid office.. He needs to discuss any deferment with his cadre. I doubt it's allowed, but I'm not certain, and it never hurts to ask.

Has he gone through Field Training? I would definitely tell your son to get in contact with his AFROTC Chain of Command ASAP. If he doesn't I would even give them a call to explain the situation since maybe they can sit him down and talk it out. When I was at Norwich this happened a few times and the Det Commander for AFROTC was able to talk a few cadets out of dis-enrolling.

Your son....as a junior at Norwich...is wise enough to know...if he has the question posed...HE...should ask the AFROTC cadre. There is NO other answer that can be provided on these forums that would be anymore authoritative.

Mr. Mullen is, again, dead-on accurate in his assessment.

Norwichdad, Tough spot, sorry. If he has already completed field training then he is under contract. If he leaves now he may have to repay all previous scholarships, or enlist. As other posters have suggested, it is up to him to contact his PAS at Norwich and work this out. Strongly urge him to have a frank conversation. They may allow him some ‘breathing room’ to push away from AF ROTC additional duties, leadership positions, etc. He may still have to attend Air Force labs and classes, but they might give him some headroom. Good luck with this tough situation!

As a concerned father I was looking for ADVISE regarding consequences to aid in HIS decision . I have NO intention of contacting ANYONE at Norwich on his behalf, I was merely hoping to see what HIS options were/are. I was seeking advise, NOT criticism. Thank you to those who have offered constructive support.

As someone that has been doing this for 28 years, 7 days per week, I can assure you it wasn't criticism. It was a extremely knowledgeable and didactic observation of too many cooks in the kitchen. The ONLY authority is the cadre at AFROTC to have the right answers. Then your son could/should discuss the options with you for the parental advice.
