November NROTC board results known?

Best of luck to your son and I'll be watching to see where he finally decides on! :thumb:

At this point, I'd be surprised if it isn't your alma mater! I'm giving him space to reach that conclusion on his own, though (much to the chagrin of USMA admissions!).

Are they pressuring him at all? I'm kind of surprised because we're being told that they're really not planning on filling any declines so we've kind of been told to back off on talking to our candidates on their decisions. I get the impression more from our RC that he'd prefer we not bring it up to them and then maybe they'll forget about it and it will be fewer slots to fill. Unless of course they're one of those "other factors in your favor" candidates you mentioned in a previous post, but in that case I probably wouldn't be working with them in the first place (we have special admissions folks for that!).

No pressure at all. DS did get an email from the RC saying that there might be some, but that has not materialized. I have to say that I am extremely impressed with USMA admissions. They give you a deadline to make a decision and leave it at that. Overall (I know that I'm biased), if DS selects USMA, they will get a very good cadet.

Its March 31st and I still havent heard from NROTC. Anyone in the same boat as me? What does this even mean?

My DS is still waiting. We have not heard from NROTC or USNA. Others?

Still nothing here, either. He got into Georgetown, GW, UVA, Fordham, and several non-NROTC schools (including Columbia and Dartmouth), and was waitlisted at Harvard, Yale, and Stanford. 2220 SAT, 97 GPA, National Hispanic Scholar, Model NATO, three varsity sports, founded his own club to send care packages to deployed troops... Apparently the Navy isn't quite sure about him, though.

My DS is in the same boat. Completed application in August and haven't heard a word since. Accepted to UVa, BC, GWU wait list at Vanderbilt and Carnegie Mellon, but Navy can't seem to decide. Anyone know how many scholarships have already been awarded?

You have an amazing kid, NROTCAlumDad. Did he also apply to AROTC and AFROTC as well as the SAs?

Well makes me feel better! I thought at the outset (aka September) that I had a really really good shoot of free college, and now i'm seeing that and thinking, whats goin' on?!? My stats aren't quite as good as yours, but close, so I don't really know what the navy is thinking right now...

I can't underscore enough the need to apply for EVERYTHING, including AROTC and AFROTC. In the coming years, we may see AROTC and AFROTC being MUCH tougher than NROTC. You can't ever know this in advance.

Best of luck to your son patentesq. Sorry to hear about NROTC. That seems unbelievable to me. But then, I was shocked when my DS didn't get MO NROTC with his stats. USMA sounds like a wonderful option!

Thank you for the very kind wordsy, pennak. Good luck to your DS, too! We have to be very proud of our boys' willingness to serve our great country.

What date do think your package get to the board? Was it in their hands before mid November? I'm wondering if they got a lot of December or later packages only to find out that their final scholarship 'budget' was relatively low and they could not offer many more scholarships and if you didn't get your package in around the November or ealier timeframe it became ridiculously competitive amongst those the board reviewed in 2011 for the first time.

I have confirmation of that thesis. For the 4th Marine District, there was a Nov. Board and a Feb. Board for MO NROTC. For the Nov. Board there were 90 applications out of which 45 scholarships were awarded. For the Feb. Board, there were 260 applications out of which 40 scholarships were awarded. The lesson here is not only apply early but be prepared to have a GREAT application early. For MO, that includes a really good first class PFT of 250 or more.

My son's recruiter rushed him into completing his application for the 1st board in November - specifically because the competition would be much more fierce for the 2nd board in February. He told us the results of the November board would not be released until the February board was finished, then they would release all results at once (8th Marine Corps District, Ft. Worth). My son continued to improve his PFT and took another test in January which was then attached to his application. On March 15th we were notified that he had been awarded a 4 yr MO NROTC scholarship. We don't know if it was awarded from the 1st or 2nd board since his application was submitted twice.

From reading the threads in this forum, I'm stumped as to why my son received the scholarship when so many other deserving young people did not. I'm incredibly proud of him and believe he is as deserving as everyone else. His stats were comparable to most of the applicants I've seen on this site. Because it's been mentioned in threads here, I will state that he is white/caucasion. I know that he had outstanding letters of recommendation and killer essays....that's the only variable that is an unknown in comparison to all the great kids who have applied. His #1 choice was a state school (CU-Boulder) and that is where the scholarship was awarded. That could have played a part, since budget seems to be an issue and the "elite" schools are incredibly expensive.

Now we wait for Dodmerb and hopefully all goes well. My heart goes out to those of you who have gotten the "we're sorry..." response. One door closes and another will open...keep the faith! Good luck to all who are still waiting. It is agony, for sure.

Thanks for that thoughtful and informative post, Too Devine (I mean "enived2")! Congrats to your DS! Timing is EVERYTHING!

Stupid question here...but how do you know what tier scholarship you've received? I read and reread his paperwork, but all it says is 4 year scholarship awarded...am I missing something, it seems there has been very little information and communication from them, I had expected more of a packet filled with overwhelming info.
