November NROTC board results known?

will he be taken out of the running for NROTC scholarship?

Yes, I believe that your DS is KP property now. It frees up another NROTC scholarship for another applicant. Hopefully, someone will jump in and say that I'm totally off base.

That certainly doesn't mean, however, that you can't have a Plan B in case he is injured before his reporting date.

^ that's not how it works for Annapolis/NROTC. The NROTC award is often kept in pocket until I-Day at Annapolis.

Well, that is why I was wondering. I understand through reading previous posts on this thread and others that one may hang on to NROTC award up to the last minute. But how likely is it that once the kid gets an appointment (early luckially) that same kid will also win a scholarship? Do many kids who have applied for both plan A and Plan B get plan A but not get selected for B? I thought it was more likely the other way around.

Blueridge, lol. Checking of the DODMERB status site is another way (maybe) to watch and (obcess) about whether there is any new files opened in applicants name. For instance. Ds applied to both USMMA and USCGA. Both have opened files for him on the Dept Of Defence Medical Exam (e for exam?) Review Board. The academies open a file once a application has been generated. BUT, He also has applied for an NROTC scholarship. The way they work with DODMERB is IF a scholarship is offered a file is THEN opened. So by checking that site regularly we could maybe get get good news before we were supposed to get good news. Mind game, really.

My question is that now he has already secured an appointment will he be taken out of the running for a NROTC scholarship. I really have too much time on my hands! :redface:

^ that's not how it works for Annapolis/NROTC.

Are you sure that this is correct? My understanding is that appointment orders take priority over NROTC. So while you might think you have an NROTC scholarship in your back pocket, sending in the acceptance of appointment form at an SA is NOT the same "no commitment" that you enjoy with NROTC. Sure, NROTC won't find out about this until I-Day, but SAs do take priority over ROTC. Of course, if you are med. DQ'd for USNA between May 1 and I-Day, you are also med. DQ'd for NROTC.

The thing to remember is with the ROTC scholarship dates there is a drop dead date, and it is not I Day, it happens way before that. Actually if I recall for NROTC it is about a 45 day time frame. Traditionally any scholarship not accepted by June 1 is pulled. The I-Day notification is for official reasons to clear the rolls...check and balance. It is for the cadre to double check and see how many spots they have open, it is not to keep the scholarship in case at BCT you leave.

I do not know one cadet that went to USNA, got rolled back and was able to use their scholarship

Files automatically roll from one Board to the next.

Not true at all. There are candidates that their score on the WCS was not comp. that the board made the decision after the 1st review that they will not make the cut. There have been a couple of thin envelopes sent out already to posters on this board.

The files that do roll are ones that are on the cusp, and the board is just going to take the approach of wait and see.

Patent is correct, accepting an apptmt is considered binding. Now if the situation was reversed, got NROTC, still waiting on KP, it would be considered non-binding since SAs always trump ROTC.

Of course, if you are med. DQ'd for USNA between May 1 and I-Day, you are also med. DQ'd for NROTC.

Not necessarily true. Let's say you break your arm on June 15th, and I Day is July 2nd, for the SA you would be considered med dq, because I believe you are only allowed to miss 8 days from a medical standpoint. This mid would be a medical turnback.

Now that same mid, would get the cast off @ Aug 1st, so by the end of Aug they should be good to go, thus they would not be DQ for NROTC.

However, if something pops up between May 1 and I-Day that permanently causes a DQ than it is true that it would be for NROTC. However, this is very rare.

In the end of the day things to remember:
1. SA's are binding and trump ROTC scholarships, even if you accepted the scholarship.

2. You do not necessarily meet board after board until the end of the yr. It is their decision if they want to give you a 2nd look, and do not take for granted it will happen.
~If it does, update that file because it typically means you are on the cusp. New EC add it, new SAT score add it, new anything add it. All of this adds into your GPA.
~~~Think of it like being deferred for a traditional college from ED to RD. They defer because they need to see something more before they make a decision.
3. There are drop dead dates for scholarships.
~ You can accept the scholarship, but still are allowed to opt out after the date for an SA.
~ They are not going to hold that accepted scholarship once you accept that apptmt because you sent them back formal notification of the SA apptmt.
4. The Cadre may keep you on their list until after I-Day, but that does not mean you have the scholarship. The reason if you are on that Cadre list is because you did Plan B and paid the deposit to their college to hold the spot. It is up to the school to determine when that drop dead date for students will be.
If you are worried about Plan B, place a deposit at his number 2 school. Usually if they rescind before a certain date the money is refundable. If you don't it still holds their spot until the next cut-off date. Deposits are about 250 bucks.
A couple of yrs ago there was a poster that got accepted to the USNA, but they placed the deposit at a traditional college just in case. The child got to USNA and was immediately hit with a medical dq. (they get medically checked out again on I day). The date had past for the college, but because they paid the deposit, they allowed them to pop back in the system. They did not get the scholarship since they had passed the drop dead date for NROTC, but at least their child got to go to the number 2 school.
Another ??????
Thanks for the responce to my original question. However, I have one other: I've noticed some to respond with how their status changes on the web site when they are offered a scholarship. They state that it say's "Congratulations you have received a $180,000 scholarship at-----University. Is that amount real. I thought an ROTC scholarship was just for Tuition, books, and stipend ????
I thought an ROTC scholarship was just for Tuition, books, and stipend ????
If tuition was $40,000.00 per year and you add the stipends, book allowances, uniforms and misc. other expenses...it could add up to $180,00.00 over 4 years. Just my opinion...
There are different tier scholarships this is why you read I got Type 1,2 or 7. Type 1 can go to any school for any amount, get into Duke and you are covered;...type 7 caps at 18K. (I think it is 18K).
^^ that's how I've viewed it also aglages:
$42,000 Tuition & Fees *4 = $168,000
4 yrs of Stipend, Army = $17,000
4 yrs. of Stipend, Navy = $13,000
4 yrs. of books, Army: $4,800
4 yrs. of books, Navy: $3,000
total package Army (potential): $189,800
total package Navy (potential): $184,000
If you add to these amounts that some colleges or Universities waive all or half of room and Board for AROTC, NROTC and AFROTC students, then you can add either $6,000 * 4 = $24,000 (half of room/board), or $12,000 * 4 = $48,000 (all of room/board) to the totals, giving:
Army w. 50% R&B school comp: $213,800
Army w. 100% R&B school comp: $237,800
Navy w. 50% R&B schooll comp: $208,000
Navy w. 100% R&B school comp: $232,000
The reality is that privates that do actually cost $42,000 Tuition/Fees typically offer either FAFSA, FAFSA + Profile, or Merit scholarship that bring the Cost of Attendance down into the 20's or 30's instead of the mid 50's. The effective value of the scholarship for anyone not already rich is probably about $100,000 better compared to the FA/Merit the school would offer anyway. Then there are schools whose Tuition + Fees are more like $32,000 or $33,000 (such at Baylor and TCU). With auto-merit scholarships at Baylor, a 1250 SAT scorer gets $13,500 chopped off of their already lower tuition, making COA $33,000 total of everything, without Financial Aid even kicking in yet... just pure merit award.
I wonder whether schools give a discount to the DOD, or do they charge them full boat?
I did all that in my head right now so there might be some logical or computational errors.
Yes, there are colleges that state even as an OOS student we will charge you IS if you are ROTC scholarship.
There are also schools that kick down room and board. Somewhere in the bowels of these threads there was a running list.
Actually just found it...it is a sticky on top. Here is just a small compilation of such schools
1. College Boston University 061 (617) 353-2000 Free Room & Board
2. Carnegie-Mellon University 067 (412) 268-2000 Free Room & Board (on a case by case basis)
3. Florida A&M University 009 (850) 599-3796 Free Room & Board (nomination from NROTC unit)
4. George Washington University 063 (202) 994-1000 Free Room & Board (prior active duty recipients) (tech majors eligible for a stipend of $4000 for room & board)
5. College of the Holy Cross 011 800) 442-2421 Free Room & Board
6. Washington State University 012 (509) 335-3564 Free Room & Board
7. Illinois Institute of Technology 013 (312) 567-3000 Free Room & Board
8. Iowa State University 015 (515) 294-4111 $2000/year Room & Board (top 25% incoming freshmen)
9. Jacksonville University 016 (904) 744-3950 Free Room & Board
10. Maine Maritime Academy 019 (800) 227-8465 Free Room & Board
11. Marquette University 020 (608) 262-3961 Free Room & Board
12. Michigan, University of 023 (734) 764-1817 Room & Board Scholarship (eng students, case by case)
13. Mississippi, University of 025 (662) 915-7211 Free Room (out of state residents)
14. Missouri, University of 026 (573) 882-2456 $1000/year to Free Room & Board (varies)
15. New York Maritime College 056 (718) 409-7220 Free Room & Board
16. Norwich University 065 (800) 468-6679 Free Room & Board
17. Prairie View A&M University 038 (409) 857-2310 Free Room & Board
18. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 040 (518) 276-6000 Free Room & Board
19. Rochester, University of 042 (716) 275-6111 Free Room & Board
20. San Diego, University of 059 (619) 260-4600 75% Room & Board
21. Savannah State University 043 (800) 788-0478 Free Room & Board
22. Southern California, University 045 (213) 746-1879 $2500/year Room & Board
23. Southern University and A&M 046 (225) 771-2430 Free Room & Board
24. Louisiana State University 046 (225) 388-1175 Free Room & Board
25. Tulane University 049 (504) 865-5000 Free Room & Board
So now you can see that it actually can be a free ride because some colleges kick in room and board, thus, even if you only get the 18K, and attend one of these schools, you should be close. Plus, as always stated the majority of candidates that get scholarships traditionally get merit too from the college itself.
???? about school choices
In my initial application I listed my school choices in order 1-5. I am still waiting to hear from my #1 choice my instate school,#2 school I was not accepted and with my #3 school my decision date has been moved to March 1. I was accepted to the engineering school of choice #4. My question : If I receive a scholarship can I just choose the school I've been accepted to or will they only give it to me if I'm accepted to choice #1,2...on down the line. What I'm trying to ask should I change my order to reflect the schools that I've been accepted to.
on my questions above ??????????????/
board does not know what schools you've listed when they review packages by design. School is chosen last by them later. So that is irrelevant as far as getting a scholarship. If your list of 5 has a school you do not want to list anymore for any reason then heck yes update it immediately, that should be obvious and that also includes the order of preference. Just don't expect the website to update for weeks. Call to confirm changes if you have doubts they were received.
We are still waiting to hear anything on our son's status. The NROTC status on the web say much of nothing compared to what others have posted. Can anyone give me any insight from what the website says if it has even been looked at? Below, is all it says. Thanks.
Application has been submitted online
Your application is at the Marine Corps District for Board Selection.
I found out from the November board that I've been nominated on January 5th. If I had checked the website earlier I might've known earlier.
Email NETC indicating your new list of 5. I would:
- remove #2
- place #4 as your #1 pick
- add a college now that your list has only 4 colleges on it
lax13,
I agree you may want to restack your list but I think you need to talk to the Units before deciding the order.
-don't remove #2, just move it to #5. There's no need to apply to a new school just to complete your list. You have already done due diligence with that school. The only reason I can see to remove it is if all of the other Units are already closed and rarely take off the waitlist.
-Talk to the Units at all of the schools on your list. They will tell you if they are already filled, when they are likely to fill, and if they generally take off the wait list and when. They also may have some insight on your likelihood of being admitted.
-If your #1 school is a long shot for you and never fills up, then it's a no-brainer and move it way down since you can always switch it later.
-If the school you are already admitted to has limited space then switch right away. If they are already filled and never take off the wait list then it may not be worth the bother (that's why it's good to talk to all of the Units early in the process.
-If you make all of the calls, assess your chances, and work at fitting the puzzle pieces together and don't see a likely match, then remove the school where you were not admitted and find an open Unit somewhere with a late admission policy where you could be happy and are likely to be admitted.
thanks for the reminder about checking directly with the Units Basil (funny name for a woman :)
I called the #1 choice on my DD's NROTC application, which is a private college with a very large NROTC Battalion that traditionally fills up early. The LT just now confirmed that their budget is cut significantly this year, and that College Program scholarships, along with 4 year, are way down... I didn't ask how much "way down" is, but I'm guessing 30% +-10% based on tone of voice.
He further indicated that he will download a report late next week (I'm assuming from NETC) that will give him a clearer picture on whether his Battalion is full, nor not, which was the purpose of my call.
