Is there anyway a rising Navy Option 2/C (Just finished sophomore year) can attend Mountain Warfare Training instead of the enlisted cruise? I know only a first class cruise is required for commission and most Mids in my unit who are college programmers and pick up end up going to CORTRAMID and then first class cruise, skipping the enlisted all together. Also, are fleet cruises possible for NROTC Mids or just academy? Thanks.

I don't think so.

This is from last year's OPNAVNOTE 1530 - Subj: 2016 MIDSHIPMAN SUMMER TRAINING PLAN

MOUNTAIN WARFARE LEADERSHIP SCHOOL TRAINING 16
1. Data
a. Purpose. To develop confidence by exposing Marine option midshipmen second class to the mental and physical challenges of operating in a mountainous environment.
b. Duration. Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center (MCMWTC) assigned Marine option midshipmen second class will receive 1 to 2 weeks of training. Dates Loading 10 Jul – 19 Jul 275 c. Location. MCMWTC, Bridgeport, CA.
2. General.
This training is offered in lieu of a second class cruise for NROTC Marine option scholarship midshipmen. The course stresses leadership and self-discipline in a demanding environment, including instruction and practical application in tactics, survival techniques, movement techniques, shelter and tent group planning, etc. The course is physically demanding and is oriented toward infantry operations.

My unit sent a Navy option to Mountain Warfare last year, he never did CORTRAMID, so I know it must be possible

Congratulations on finding the unexplained anomaly. Perhaps a change of option was being explored. Regardless, as a matter of SOP, units don't send Navy options to Mountain Warfare, much the same as they don't send Marine options on enlisted 2/C cruises. If your unit is operating differently, perhaps go ask them instead of posing the question on here.

I am going to blunt... what is this training going to do for you as a Navy Option? Regardless of how 'cool' the training is, what skills will you obtain that will help you on a ship, sub or plane as a Navy guy? Are you exploring changing to USMC? If you are going Navy you should take every single chance you are given to get to the fleet, interact with sailors, decide if SWO, subs or pilot is for you and even one step further if a cruiser or amphibious, fast attack or boomer, helo or cargo or jet is the right fit for you.
