If one were to receive an NROTC on the first board(oct), would this somewhat indicate competitiveness for USNA appointment off NWL(150 spots). We are assuming that this individual loses slate.
 
Wouldn’t read anything into that. Two completely different processes. Some similar criteria, but still separate systems.
 
It certainly indicates your DS/DD is competitive for the USNA, but there is no link to one getting you the other. Too many factors. If you are in fact speaking of your child, a BIG congrats. Best Plan B there is..

NROTC scholarships present a Win-Win-Win. 1) It DOES mean you are competitive for an appointment (as are all applicants who receive a candidate number); 2) NROTC scholarship means you will commission as a Naval Officer (so, congratulations!); and 3) NROTC scholarship provide the perfect launching pad from which to re-apply to the Academy next year (if that's still your goal). The Brigade has many MIds who were 2nd or 3rd-time re-applicants from NROTC. Don't (ever) give up the ship! (EVER!)
 
What is so difficult this year is that NSI is required. I cannot wrap my brain around keeping NROTC as a Plan B up to and through I Day since you have to respond and be assigned a session at NSI. I believe this is the first year for this requirement. As I understand it, if you go with SA, you would be foregoing Plan B NROTC and if something went sideways during Plebe Summer you would have to then go the route of side loading at your college of choice??

I think that if you enroll at a SA you automatically forfeit your NROTC scholarship regardless.

My DS is in this same predicament. What did y’all decide to do? I am wondering if we just keep plan C as a backup, which does not require NSI.

Yes, this is true. But if the unthinkable happened and one was turned away I Day, you in the past could have possibly still gone with the NROTC scholarship (depending on the college and whether or not you had paid deposit). Now, with NSI requirement, you cannot keep that option.

Well, we decided that it would be Plan B without NROTC, use the merit scholarship offered and side load into 3 year NROTC, and hopefully reapply. But, that is all worst case scenario. He accepted USNA.
 
My DS received his NROTC Scholarship at his 1st school choice VMI (hallelujah). He has to attend one of three NSI sessions, however, he has NOT had a decision yet from USNA which he wants more than anything else. Would it be of any benefit for him to notify his BGO and USNA rep like improving chances or time for decision? Or should he tell his NROTC officer he's waiting on USNA decision?
 
He should simply accept the scholarship. If he gets an appointment he can let the VMI unit know he will be attending USNA at that time. If it comes up in conversation he should feel free to mention he's waiting to hear from USNA. No one will hold it against him. BTW, having the scholarship will in no way give him a boost with USNA, so there is no point in calling.

Congratulations on a terrific plan B.
