NROTC NSI Assignment

Slightly off topic, but is it acceptable for one to sign up for NSI and set up all travel plans when still waiting for Service Academy decisions?
I think this is what we are planning to do.

Is anyone aware of dates for the NSI sessions? And do you get to pick a session or is it assigned by the unit you are reporting to? Thank you!

These are the NSI dates for this year
Iteration 1: 6 – 24 June
Iteration 2: 27 June – 15 July
Iteration 3: 18 July – 5 August

The CMGO will assign which iteration you will attend and that’s based on information you provide.

He was selected on the December board.

Completed all forms that he could electronically.

Mailed the other required forms as soon as he got them.

Recv’d notification of their review of what he snail-mailed them with a tentative NSI assignment pending final review.

Recv’d NSI assignment via email today, he’s assigned to NSI 2 starting 27 June, graduating 15 July.
Sweet, that is when my DS reports 🥰

My son received his today and is assigned to the same one.

We should start a parent support group. 😂

Will you be going to the graduation? I didn't know that was a thing until today.
Thinking about going to the graduation. I know it’s a fast event and probably won’t spend much time with DS, but I’d still like to go. Have you decided if you’re going?

We are planning on attending with my father.

Our son will be the 3rd consecutive generation of our family to begin their Naval Service at Great Lakes. My father went there for Recruit Training in ‘61, I went there for Recruit Training & EM “A” School in ‘87.

That’s awesome! Sounds like you’re a seasoned pro in all things Navy. This Navy experience will be new for us and I need to educate myself. This will be will my 3rd child in a completely different branch.

Anyway, I’m looking into the trip details now and that part always stresses me out. 🤣

You qualify for joint service credit!

Welcome aboard!

Just a recommendation. Hampton Inn Chicago/Gurnee was where we stayed night before graduation. 15 minutes from base. Has resturants, pub, and ice cream all across parking lot. Decent deep dish less than a mile away. Hotel price was also decent last year, but that could change of course.

Thank you! This is the kind of insider info I need! Next, I need to do the background checks to be able to get on the base.

Background checks are pretty easy. Really just basic info. Just include copies with your Mid candidate when they go to NSI. The ticket pick up is at the NEX just outside base either afternoon before graduation or super early morning of graduation. They will have Mid Instructors handing out the tickets. You can ask them which Group (A,B,C,D) he is in. Where they have the graduation will have signs to show about where the units will be after they march in. NEX is also a chance to buy some Navy Merch if you want. Nothing really NROTC specific, but Navy stuff all the same.

Son hasn’t seen the NSI Visitor Access Form for 2024 posted yet on the NROTC Homepage.

This was last years and it was the same as year before that. I don't think it really changes that much. I believe DS got a email from his unit with the sheet several weeks before his iteration, but I found this before then and noticed it was exactly the same.

This atleast give you a idea of what to expect.

So excited for this. Thank you so much for all the info, much appreciated. Keep it coming! 🤭

Interesting. Are they still being strict with the covid vaccinations?

Nothing last year. I think that was just on the form used. Maybe they will change the form this year, but no vaccine checks, no masks, nothing like that.

A fun little "preview" of what NSI was like for one Mid candidate. Done pretty well I think. More for parents to enjoy as Mid Candidates should have alittle surprise about what will happen, though all of this info is out in the web already.

Good to know. Thank you again for taking the time to give us that insider knowledge. As I mentioned to GrilledCheese in a previous post, NROTC is uncharted waters for us an I’m trying to be a sponge and soak up all the info.

Also, funny you posted that video. I sent that to my DS shortly after he was awarded the scholarship. Long story short, he wasn’t sure if he wanted to do military even after doing the interview and submitting his application, but he changed his mind along the way. The change prompted me to remind him what he’s getting himself into. The video was great, and he’s all in now. Phew!
