NROTC scholarship notification

Just spoke at the NROTC office of one of the schools my DS was accepted and asked them for advice. I was told that students sometimes do not find out until end of April, even May. Looks like we may have to put a deposit at a couple of different schools and make a decision later.

NROTC MO Scholarship Portal information changed today

Yesterday my DS portal said...

Today the portal changed to.......

The NSTC Selection/Placement Office has received your application.

We heard nothing until an email from NROTC. The email was titled "NROTC Acceptance Booklet". It was a congratulations email on the 4 year scholarship that our DS was awarded with instructions and links to accept or decline the scholarship. DS had application complete in December. Had to sign paperwork for drugs etc. in January. We heard nothing after that until the email on March 12th. The official letter followed that Saturday. Hope this helps.

thanks Spelly and congrats to DS! we have been waiting with no word since Sept. It's been a long wait. Hope it ends up being worth it! :thumb:

My best wishes to everyone still waiting. Since my DS is trying for the sideload scholarship, the portal does not even seem to be available for him (me) to check. Many of you have been waiting for months! I guess I should quit feeling sorry for myself for this wait of just few weeks (so far) since his application was submitted. And a mighty long few weeks it has been!

No change on our DS' portal. I wonder if "placement" is where they actually pick which of the 5 choices the applicant receives a scholarship...

I called the Marine District in KC yesterday and was told that all NROTC MO selectees had been notified by phone the day before (Tues, 25 Mar). No phone call, no selection.

They didn't impress me with their level of knowlege or their desire to be helpful, so my level of confidence in the information isn't 100%, but the civilian I spoke to asked a Major who gave him that info. I would assume he was only talking about KC district though.

Just checked my DS portal and there is a notification that he was not selected for a scholarship. After all those forms, applications, physicals, fitness tests for USNA, USAFA and NROTC, he gets nothing. At least now we know and we can move on with selecting a college.

Tiger: sorry to hear of the decision regarding your DS. For your DS and all the candidates who fell short of their goals, I want to encourage them to keep an eye on the objective and seek alternative paths towards commissioning. Depending on the military branch, there are a number of alternatives including reapplying as a college freshman, side-load scholarships, OCS and other programs. Best of luck

Thank you for the reply USMCGrunt. It looks like he will be attending Lehigh University as it is the most competitive engineering school he was accepted at. Unfortunately Lehigh does not have AF or N Rotc (only Army) so I don't think he will be part of that. He is considering reapplying to the USNA. Would it affect his re application if he is not part of ROTC his freshman year?

I've not been part of the admissions process at USNA but I did do a tour of duty as a Company Officer. While being in a NROTC unit might help his application, the lack of it won't hurt him. More important to morally, mentally, and physically fit....stay out of trouble, get the best grades he can, and maintain a high PRT/PFT score.

No one comes to USNA with advanced standing...they all start as Plebes. Difference for kids with prior college credit is that they may have an opportunity to start taking graduate courses their senior year.

That's my 2 pennies....though it's been over 10 years since my tour.

Agree with both USMCGrunt and USMCDad. Lack of ROTC won't hurt. Participating in ROTC can help (if that makes sense). I would add that although there was no financial gain through the application process, I'm will to bet some "intangibles" accrued. If re-application doesn't come through there is always oCS after college, or if he's interested in USMC there is the PLC program while he is in college. Hoping for the best for your DS! :thumb:

I suggest you speak with USNA about the process and perhaps even post to that section of the forum.

In particular, you may want to investigate any particular classes your should (or shouldn't) take freshman year in prep for a possible transfer.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. As a non-military family this whole process was quite an experience. I am very proud of my DS for considering to serve and I am sure that he will be succesful in the future!

Today around 11 am my portal was changed and I received an email stating that I was accepted for a 4 year Navy ROTC scholarship to Oregon State University. Pretty far, living in West Virginia and going to WVU. A huge sigh of relief after being rejected to USNA last year. Don't ever give up!

Congrats Jack! Same thing happened to my son today. NROTC 4 year to U of Wisc. Madison. It has been a good day. :)

My son received a phone call today notifying him of receiving a 4 year MO scholarship to UW Madison where he is currently a college programmer.

Congrats! I am a bit new to all this, and probably confused. My understanding was that if you are a college programmer, that means you're in the ROTC without a scholarship while you're taking classes. I thought they required a minimum time of observation before they could recommend you for that sideload scholarship. I also think I heard something about if you haven't taken a certain amount of credits, you can still apply for a full scholarship. Would his scholarship be retroactive to the semester he already finished? Is his not considered a "sideload scholarship"?
