I have a question about the license/ID our DS should have for NSI. The NSI paperwork says that a Real ID is needed. Would an "enhanced" license also qualify? It appears that an enhanced license actually allows everything a Real ID can do, and even more as it can be used for travel between the US and Canada/Mexico/and some Caribbean countries. We need to upgrade his standard Driver License and would prefer an enhanced license as it seems to cover more...

I do not have specific knowledge about this but I've been in and then associated with the Navy since the early 70's and based on
long observation/experience, I'd strongly recommend that YOUR SON follow instructions. He does not want to be the one
trying to explain to staff why his super whiz bang license is not what the paperwork said to bring. YOUR SON will be the one
who has to deal with any blowback.

It is always better to follow the instructions as detailed. there are reasons , usually, that they ask for certain things. For example, NSI recommends a prepaid debit card to pay for gear at NSI. Reason for this is that some Midshipman candidates have brought just there debit/credit card and it was rejected at the NEX. Not always, but enough that they request the prepaid debit card.

If your looking for something to help with getting in/out of the country, then maybe a passport would be a better option. It would help him later at college for summer cruises in getting out of country locations.

A few states issue "enhanced" driver licenses instead of calling them "real ID" but here is information showing that "enhanced" conforms to legal requirements for "real ID."

Basically for NSI: if a driver license is acceptable as "real ID" by TSA at airport, it should be fine.
(During their first year at NROTC units, 4-c scholarship Mids will get military CAC cards.)

>> "An Enhanced license, permit or non-driver ID is Federal REAL ID compliant and is accepted to board a domestic flight (within the US), and enter military bases and certain federal facilities."

>> "State-issued Enhanced Driver's Licenses (EDLs) are designated as acceptable border-crossing documents by DHS under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative and are acceptable alternatives for official federal purposes such as accessing a federal facility or boarding a commercial aircraft."

My understanding is that enhanced IDs cost more than Real ID driver licenses. I would just apply that extra expense to the cost of a passport, which the individual is going to need anyway.

The purpose of the REAL ID was to avoid a person being rejected by airport security (TSA). Assuming the enhanced version will be accepted by TSA you will be fine. If you are not sure, then I would reach out to NSTC through their email and remove any doubt.
