Off to LDAC

Keep in mind that 7th and 8th Rgt. were told all mail should be sent NLT 7/10 if you want to make sure it is delivered before your cadet leaves Ft. Knox...They do not forward, and rarely return leftover mail...(Not sure how they get away with that, but it was true in BCT)...

Do you know if that included priority mail too? My DS (also 7th reg) just asked me to send him something rather important (can't believe he actually wrote a letter) and I was going to send it priority mail.

Thanks for the info, will post my last parcel Thursday.

All I know is 3rd hand info from multiple parents who got letters...If you can send it tomorrow, you should be ok. 2-3 day Priority would get to Ft. Knox on Saturday or Monday, and they would have a few days to get it to your cadet. Any later than that, and I would call cadet command and ask if you need to overnight it, with a signature guarantee, and a promise they would deliver...If your DS has follow on training, you may not have a choice.
Good Luck,
Julie

Ohio2015Parent the bonding is nice to hear! Was there anything that your DS would have wanted at LDAC but might not have received in a care package?

Chap stick and Gold Bond powder, baby wipes and bug spray:thumb: Any type of food -- DS lost 10lbs at LDAC eating the field meals(said MREs would have been welcome that the fast start or whatever they're called are absolutely nasty!!) He might have eaten bugs but all the ticks have to be sent for testing

I have just received a letter from our DS in 7th Regt, the last one he wrote was a 5th grade project.
It would seem that baby wipes, deodorant, newspapers, and also being the tough bunch they are, Gummy Bears are all in high demand.
They have moved out of their tents and now reside in an aircraft hangar, lucky them.

funny you mention gummy bears. I mailed a 5 pound bag to a friend at LDAC the other day. Regardless if they are actually able to finish it in time, the challenge to do so will probably boost spirits.

Thanks Bull. LDAC may have been a mess, but his squad was awesome and they really bonded together to endure. This was so different from BCT where DS was very happy to leave - I think these cadets will stay in touch and support each other throughout MSIV year. Glad LDAC is over for him - no great accomplishments or awards, but the experience built a better future 2LT

They most certainly will. I still talk to friends from LDAC quite often.

Lucky #13

Yes, there are still Cadets out there who haven't left yet for LDAC. DS leaves on Sunday for the final LDAC--#13. He requested a late slot because he's applying to medical school and has to get all his essays done before he leaves, and he's still receiving them as of today (hopefully they all arrive before he leaves, but probably not).

He's hearing all the problems/rumors/etc and actually it has lessened his stress level as he's assuming it will be a mess, so he's preparing for that, which you really can't truly prepare for! ;)

He's disappointed that things aren't going to happen that he was expecting but he will go with the flow and I'm sure it will be a learning experience. I'm taking notes on the things that everyone has needed (tick spray, gold bond, etc). It will help him with his final packing.

So if there are any other gems of knowledge to pass on, please let me know and I'll pass them on to him. He has fellow cadets who were in several of the other regiments, including 1st and 2nd, so he's hearing from them about their experiences.

Thanks for any last minute suggestions!

VAMOM,

Best of luck to your son, he will have the honor of being in the last official LDAC Regiment since this is the last year, tell him to lock the door on his way out.

The way things have been going, by the time he gets there they all may be just sitting around a campfire singing Kumbaya.

Thanks so much to all of you for sharing your knowledge here. It is so wonderful to have a little insight into what's going on at LDAC. My DS is in the 7th Reg. His girlfriend had a note from him yesterday (this is the first that we've heard from him). He confirmed much of what's been said here. He said basically everything that he trained for over the last 3 years was either been canceled or has been made very easy because of the heat casualties. He said that he qualified with his M16 and his mid-way evaluation was an E. He said that he didn't know what to make of that because some of the others in his PLT got S's that he felt sure deserved an E. That made me think back to what someone said here about the evals being more subjective going forward. He also said that the best part was bonding and getting to know the guys - he said that it is like a brotherhood. He's told me before that is thing he likes the best so far about ROTC, Ranger Club, CULP, etc - being on a team and the camaraderie.
I hope I get a note soon, but I guess GF before mom! I'm just happy to hear from him and happy she shared it with me!

I too attended Basic Camp at Ft Knox (circa 1989). We suffered the heat of the Kentucky summer, and humidity that would make frogs sick. They marched us everywhere we went in garrison, and when we travelled to ranges, they packed us in cattle cars. (Do they even use those anymore?) The Drill Sergeant taught us how to use the wet bulb thermometer and had us, as a platoon, drink entire canteens of water about every 20 minutes or so when the Heat Cat was four or above. I can still taste the water from that dusty old lister bag. When I returned to the dry heat of August in the CA central valley (think 105 degrees), it was almost refreshing! I learned the meaning of "but it's a dry heat". I never really appreciated that until after summer in KY.

Not sure if the cattle cars made it to Ft Knox this year, but we rode in them last year at Lewis. I was "corrected" by a cadre member (a LTC) one day for calling it a cattle car, apparently the new term they prefer to use is Silverside... Didn't help, we all called them cattle cars.

Army Chief of Staff visits ROTC Cadets at summer training
Pretty good quote

"You've got to learn from your mistakes," Odierno said. "Don't be a complacent leader. One pitfall I've seen in leaders is they look for instant gratification. You've got to do what is best for all your Soldiers in the long term. Do the tough right and not the easy wrong. That is what makes a good leader.

I got back a week ago from 1st regiment. I can tell you that evals are still going as normal. I received an overall E and top 5. The cadet news network is going crazy with the rumors.

Congrats on the accolades - that should definitely help you for your OMS.

I would hold the party until all the regiments graduate and the dust settles, you were the first two regiments to graduate, there are 9 left to go, a lot can change.

Congratulations on a great job.

Stepping off for 13th Reg today (should've already been wheels down at Louisville by now but the initial flight got cancelled). See you all on the other side.

Apologize if I missed something

Received text today (7/13/2014) from DS at 1300. I assume he was still at ORD with a bunch of cadets in transit to Louisville.

He said that LDAC will be 8 days shorter than originally planned...or at least as laid out by cadet command in his itinerary.

Is this true? Rumor? Something I missed from earlier in the thread? Something he was informed of earlier and spaced out?

If true, how does he/we deal with transportation? He has been ticketed to fly directly to CLCT from Louisville at the end of LDAC.

My apologies if this was discussed earlier. Thanks in advance.

cb,
I have heard this rumor on another forum this morning. I suggest you stay close to your phone. If it is valid, it will be confirmed during inprocessing, or at the latest by tomorrow morning. I assume Regt. 13 is relatively small in size, and factoring in the other changes they have made to training as the summer went along, I could see them condensing the schedule a few days.
Cadet Command would be responsible for reticketing him. They could either send him home in between...or not. I assume after dropping the ball with the Regt 1/2 cadets who had follow on training, they will be proactive with the remaining cadets.
