Do you ever hear a song and it just transports you to a completely different time and place? Either the first time you heard it always comes up in your head when you hear the song being played, or else the song itself is just the perfect expression of how you felt at a certain moment in time? If so- which ones and why?
For me there are two:
Maggie May by Rod Stewart. For some reason every time I hear that song I am once again in High School- but not in HS- rather I am laying in my bed looking at my clock radio as I wake up on a school day. (I can't remember why- I assume that some DJ on WAAF must have played that song a few times at the same time every morning - "wake up Maggie I think I have something to say to you.Late September and I really should be back in school"...) For the first few seconds whenever I hear that play on the oldies station- it's 1971 and I am again 15 years old. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xz129_rod-stewart-maggie-may_music
Hold Me,Thrill Me, Kiss Me, by Mel Carter. I'm not old enough to have appreciated this song the first time it came out in 1965 (I was 9 ok!) but when I saw the movie "We Were Soldiers" and they play this song in a scene where the Bn is having a dance prior to deployment it struck me that this scene and song captured the feeling I had so perfectly that it almost physically transported me to the airfield saying goodbye to my wife and new baby son. I went out, bought the best of Mel Carter, and now when I hear this song- I have hair, my wife is as beautiful as always but 19 years younger and my son is not yet walking. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjPkZvzAOnk
So how about you? What music brings you back to a different world?
