Official USAFA Class of 2017 Appointment thread

i'm not sure if i read your post wrong but do you mean 52% of qualified candidates got a nom or 52%received an appointment if they had a nom

My bad afa. For the Class of 2016, 52% of the qualified candidates with an nomination received an appointment.

USCGA:
248 from 1,982 applications (12.5%)

Source: http://admissions.uscga.edu/i2v/Files/Class of 2016 Profile.pdf

Also, it seems that the total application data from the USAFA, USMA, and USNA demographic reports consist of all applications started, not all applications completed. This means that the acceptance rates for completed applications are likely to be significantly higher.

I don't believe that is quite correct. You are calculating enrolled versus offers of appointment. In this case in order to normalize your argument it should be 315 offers of appointment divided by 1982 completed applications for a 15.9% acceptance rate (if you were offered an appointment, you were in fact accepted). At USAFA, a person in the Candidate pool has typically completed all facets of their application but may not have a nomination, a qualified candidate has a completed application, is medically qualified, and most importantly has a nomination. For 2016 the Candidate pool was 8043. 8043 divided by 1214 offers of appointment equals 15.1% acceptance rate. If based upon enrollments then USAFA would be 12.47% (Please note this excludes medical turn backs, international students and such).

I don't have enough posts to be able to include URL's in my post, but as a follow-up from NN139's post above, tweaking the URL gives an interesting comparison of the stats for all the service academies. Substitute "usma", "usna", or "usmma" for "usafa" in the web address to view the stats pages for the other academies.

It looks like USAFA had the fewest applicants and the highest (comparative) acceptance rate among the major service academies, not including the USMMA.

USAFA:
1,035 from 12,274 applications (8.4%)

USMA:
1,193 appointments from 15,171 applications (7.9%)

USNA:
1,394 appointments from 20,601 applications (6.8%)

USMMA:
409 appointments out of 2,211 applications (18.5%)

Your numbers are a bit off for USMMA, I think. You really are quoting the "admitted" numbers in each SA except you put the "appointment number" down for the USMMA. I just like to see apples to apples.

USAFA:
1,035 admitted from 12,274 applications (8.4%)

USMA:
1,193 admitted from 15,171 applications (7.9%)

USNA:
1,211 admitted from 20,601 applications (5.87%)

USMMA:
273 admitted from of 2,211 applications (12.34%)

Be careful of how these numbers are recorded. It is not consistent between each of the service academies. In the case of Annapolis the idea that it has nearly double the number of applicants as Air Force and 33% more than West Point seem odd to me. Consider this article by the infamous Bruce Fleming that claims that USNA severely inflates the number of applicants and does not report the number of completed applications in order to make the institution appear more selective than it really is.

I agree completely. Even with the four documents are on Paul Ryan’s page, it is hard to really compare.
But going by what was documented in the links, I think the posted corrections are closer to correct than what was originally quoted by SanDiegan. I was just sensitive that USMMA percentage was higher because it was computed from “appointments offered” number.
As with anything…one can lie with statistics.
Bottom line is – these are ALL very competitive organizations and all the applicants should be proud to have a complete application, nomination, passing medical and fitness tests.

thanks for the clarification :thumb:

every time i think how i have the chance to be one of those 52% or whatever it will be this year, i feel so blessed to have made it this far. we'll see what happens this month

Yeah, I noticed this but couldn't figure out how to edit the post. I messaged the original poster about it though.

I believe the admissions panel met today. Maybe some people will hear something soon.

No worries. It is interesting to dig into the numbers a bit, but the reality is that it is not as simple as "there are only 2500 qualified applicants and the targeted class size is 1165, so I have a 50% chance of getting selected", there are so many other factors - the number of candidates from your state, who you are competing with, etc...it's just not that easy.

Unlike admissions process at a regular school, a service academy applicant must not only complete the online application (which is similar, but generally more extensive than most college applications), but then must proceed to pass the physical fitness tests, clear medical standards, and then be fortunate enough to get a nomination. The pool gradually shrinks down to that pool of qualified candidates, but by then it is a very competitive group which has to be distributed amongst the mandated appointments granted to members of congress, the President, etc. So for those of you who are left in the qualified candidate pool, it is a good place to be, but you just don't know.

P.S. I just looked at the USMMA stats, they offered 409 appointments out of 2211 applications. That gives them an acceptance rate of about 18.5%. The merchant marine academies are kind of a hidden gem, it offers a good education and an excellent career upon graduation. Well worth considering, yet many people have no idea they even exist.

Using info from the link in Post #208, I did some math. Does this make any sense?

Class of 2016 Qualified Candidates: 2331
Total Admitted: 1035

Breakdown: Men: 799 (77%) Women: 236 (23%)

ASSUMING [/U]that the ratio of Qualified Candidates is also approx. 3/4 male to female, I believe that for women it's 583 (25% of 2331) competing for 236 (women admitted slots) approx. a 40% chance of female admission from Qualified pool. I am not into statistics, but since we all have time…

Looks like things are starting to move! DS received an email this morning saying he has a message on his portal. The message said he was offered an appointment!:jump1: SO exciting!!

I spoke with my Admissions Counselor this morning and he told me that the Board is meeting all this week and will be fine tuning their choices next week. He told me to expect a change in my appointment status (whether I've received one or not) in late march to early april.

Congratulations

alparent, AWESOME NEWS!!!

BIG HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to your DS & your family!!!!

:groupwave: :groupwave: :groupwave:

Does your new appointee know about the email yet or are you waiting for him to get home and check the portal???

I'm so happy for the new appointees. I remember last year this time and the waiting, ugh that was sooooooo painful. It was joyous and actual sort of comical when he found out on March 22nd. Here's the story I posted last year.

Very happy for my DS. :shake: His dream came true today at the track meet. The call came in on my phone, it was the Congressman asking for my son. I had to tell Mr Kissell, that he was at the opposite end of the field getting ready to run the 2 mile. I asked if my son could call him right back and he said he might be unavailable as he had to go into a meeting, so I asked him if he could hold on and I would run the phone to my son. He said that would work, so, I ran all the way to the other end of the track with the Congressman hanging on and he could hear me huffing and puffing and squealing like a little girl, I was so excited. He probably thought it was pretty funny, but I really wanted him to tell my son the news he has been waiting so long to hear. So, I run up to my kid and tell him he has an important phone call from Congressman Kissell and his month just drops open and I hand him the phone. It was an amazing moment and he got to share it with all his buds from the track team and several of them are also in his AFJROTC unit and have lived this with him over the last few years. It was so cool. Emotions are going crazy right now. I'm so incredibly proud of my boy. :thumb: Dad is too, but was at work out of town and was the first phone call afterwards.

Happy to say he is adjusting to his new life and thriving. He is very happy with his decision to be there. USAFA is a tough bird (pun intended) and everyone will face challenges, some unique to the individual and some everyone must endure. It is a HUGE growing up time for these "wet behind the ears" freshmen (aka basics, then doolies, C4Cs and 4-digs). As parents you are going to experience pride in them like you never have before. :shake: And a little secret, the ride is just beginning; if you think that their preparation to get to this point has been, uh exciting, just wait, because it has only just begun. When you hear this being called a "rollercoaster ride", that is NOT an exaggeration. So hang on! :thumb:

Recognition starts today for the C4Cs and I couldn't be more excited and on the edge of my seat at this very moment, anxiously awaiting for the WebGuy pictures to start posting than I was a year ago as we awaited the news of his appointment. It keeps getting better. :shake:

Oh and be sure to bubble wrap your appointees, and enjoy your family time over the next 3 1/2 months. This time will fly.

Thank you, mom!! It is unreal and we are so proud of DS! Your story is awesome!! That's exactly how it should be! My DS runs XC and I can just picture the running and huffing and puffing! Too funny!:shake: What a great memory!!!
Unfortunately.... My DS is out of town on his Senior trip- UGH!! And they are not allowed to use their phones for texting during the day- UGH!! But...at the risk of him getting in trouble.... I just had to text him to "READ YOUR EMAIL!!!". I wanted him to read it himself since he's been waiting and hoping for a BFE... But it was killing me! I guess he sensed the urgency in my texts and FINALLY responded! He is Ecstatic!! I wish I could have seen his face and been there when he heard...but he was with his senior class and that's the next best thing!! We will have to celebrate when he gets back home- Maybe by then my feet will be on the ground:wink:
I'm so glad your DS is adjusting and thriving!! Reaching Recognition is huge!! I didnt realize they would take pictures during recognition- hope you get some good ones!! Another milestone on a long journey! Thank you for your advice and best wishes for you and your DS!!
