Official USAFAPS (Prep School) Class of 2013 Appointment thread

Personal Computer

Yea, it doesn't make any sense.

There are many things you cannot do with a Government computer. Specifically, connect a cell phone or ipod/MP3 to it. If you need to update your cell phone software (i.e. iOS 6) or you would like to download music from the iTunes store and sync to your phone, you would have to use your own personal computer to do that. There are many Wi-Fi options on and off base that will allow you to gain internet access besides just from your dorm room which is LAN only for your government computer.

But, but, but I have a 30" monitor... How am I supposed to carry this thing in?! Haha

If we're supposed to bring our own desktops, I'll probably have my shipped in from my parents if they'll allow it... If we're supposed to bring laptops, I don't have one.

You don't need either. It's a personal convenience. I would not recommend a desktop.

My DD's high school counselor asked her how much the USAFA Prep School scholarship was "worth". I told her "PRICELESS":yay:... but I guess the counselor is looking for a dollar amount. Anyone have an accurate dollar amount for the Prep School?

$40,000

On the packing list, it says that if you have foot issues you can bring your own running shoes. I have very narrow, flat feet. Some brands (like nike) tend to run narrow and work pretty well, combined with the insoles that I plan on bringing. Does anybody know what brand the Prep school issues us? I know it's pretty random information, but anything helps!

Not sure what we have on tap for this year, but I'd bring your own if you have trouble getting a good fit. If the ones we issue fit, then great, but if not you won't have sore feet.

To all prep school scholarship recipients, there's now a link on the portal to the "Instructions to United States Air Force Academy Preparatory School Selectees." I know a lot of people here have seen this already, but for those who have yet to read it, go ahead and check it out.

On that note, does anyone know if we will fill out the Questionnaire for National Security Positions?

That questionnaire is mainly for the Directs so that they have the right information to fill in the forms on-line when the arrive. The information will be used for a background check for you to receive your Secret Clearance which is required for you to get a CAC and access the network. Priors with a current security clearance won't need to re-submit.

Understood. Thank you for the information.

No, he already took leave to come home. He's going straight from base to Colorado.

Last I talked to him, he didn't have his flights yet. In fact, the other day he said he thought he might have to go earlier then the 11th now??

Not sure though. I'll get the latest when we talk.

Priors show on 11 Jul and Directs on 18 Jul. There were some bad dates on pgs 190 and 192 of the reporting instructions. 11 and 18 Jul are correct.

My orders say that my RNLTD is Jul 10. Does this mean I arrive a day early?

You will. You have to report around 0730 on 11 Jul. So they (TMO) are flying you in on 10 Jul. If you would like a place to stay, call Mr Winter at (719) 333-2583 and ask him to participate in the Bed and Breakfast Program. This is a program where we arrange for families associated with USAFA and the military to meet you at the airport, feed you dinner and breakfast, give you a warm bed to sleep in and then bring your to the P to drop you off on 11 Jul.

Thanks! I have a brother that lives close to the AFA, so I'll just stay him.

I just wanted to make sure I didn't need to physically be at the Prep School before 0730 on 11 July.

It is my understanding that directs are to report on July 18 at 0700. Is this information correct?

Just to clarify, we report in uniform with our stripes on. Correct

Either way is fine. We'll work with you to get it right. You will be issued new ABUs so if you keep at least 1 or 2 uniforms with your stripes on, that will benefit you after graduation. You will have the option to work at the base after graduation and before reporting to USAFA. You will do that work in your old enlisted rank. Also, if you have not used all of your leave before arriving, it would benefit you to show up with 15 to 50 days of leave on the books.

Actually, all Cadet Candidates need to pursue a Nomination to USAFA through all available sources (Senator, Congressman, VP, Presidential). Please make initial contact with your Senators and Congressman from your district as it applies to your home of record as soon as possible. It will make your first few weeks at the Prep School less hectic.
I stand corrected. Thank you for clarifying. :thumb:

My DS already bought everything on the list in the instructions, including new uniforms. He will not be 'issued' more will he?

Related but unrelated...

Tonight at the "Doolie/Preppie Sendoff Dinner" in Phoenix, "Webguy" was our guest speaker.

He informed us that WebGuy will also be covering the prep school this year!!!

So...for those interested....head over to his site! Since there is a fee charged for full access, I'm not posting the link. But it's easy to find; anyone in the USAFA forum can show you or you can "google" it...

I'll go back and research why the list of things to buy includes new uniforms when they are something that we issue, but rest assured that if he shows up with all of the uniforms that he needs, we will not issue him more and charge him. Please just ask him to speak up as he goes through the in-processing issue line.
