Orientation 2013

Boots and socks

I just got my pair of boots and socks. The cadet showing me around was nice enough to buy me a pair of socks to try the boots on with, but you DONT NEED TO BUY SOCKS!!! After I paid for the boots with the money order, I was directed to the uniform room with socks. TWO PAIRS OF SOCKS COME WITH THE BOOTS! I wish I had known this earlier. Just letting you 2nd and 3rd orientation goers in on it.

Thanks, NordicSkier...that's very good to know. :)

Hmmm???? I certainly wasn't offered two paris of socks with my boot purchase. I also thought I saw a flyer stating that the socks were extra.

Buy anyway, I certainly enjoyed my orientation. It's a bit of a bummer that it comes after recognition though. My host told me much of the pre-recognition life, but it isn't the same as seeing it. Needless to say, as I mentioned, I am about $87 invested into the AFA, so I can now saw with near certainty that I will be back in Colorado Springs on June 25.

I'll be staying at the Holiday Inn Express on Commerce. Is anyone else staying there for the second orientation?

I got no socks

Oh well, the boots are awesome, as well as most of orientation.

Same here, no socks. I would definitely advise the other appointees to ask about them though.

weird, no socks either, I even asked to see them so I could know how thick they are... the guy just stood up, went over to the store and showed me a pair then left. And, for the most part, orientation was good.

For those of you who have already gone to orientation or current cadets...

How do they go about pairing you with a cadet. I know a cadet out there and plan to have him as my escort.

I don't want to be accidentally paired with a random cadet and have him paired with someone else. He signed up officially through the cadet scheduling at the Academy, so I assume I am already listed as the appointee he will escort?

Once you get to the field house to pick up your luggage, he will be there waiting for you and will flag you down. No worries.

Some cadets were holding up signs with appointees names on them in front of the field house. I got picked because I'm from MN, lol :shake:

My daughter, an Appointee (Carrie) plans to attend the dinner on Sunday, April 26 at 4:30 pm (Red Robin, or elsewhere as finalized). Please add her to your RSVP list -- do parents attend this dinner or just cadets and appointees?

***both parents and appointees, and even siblings if they're here, are more than welcome to attend. the dinners are really informal, anbd just something the cadets set up for a number of purposes:

1) let's appointees meet each other, as well as parents meet other appointee parents

2) put faces with screen names

3) give parents and appointees interaction with cadets to ask questions

4) get food (since you all need to eat anyway)

5) get the cadets away from USAFA for an afternoon ;)

I also got no socks.

The pairing up with a cadet, at least for us guys, was, uh, random, I guess you can call it. It involved many cadets lined up on both sides, screaming, while appointees walked down the aisle. The cadets generally held signs with either name of the appointee or relative location the cadet (and therefore appointee) was from, and the appointee picks a cadet.

Yeah, I pretty much just walked until I saw somebody holding up an NJ sign.

haha, the appointees didn't pick the cadets, it was the other way around. And they completely did it on purpose lol hilarious. I walked all the way down trying to see my name or my state and couldnt so at the end this guy just picked me like "why not".

I'm coming too!

In the orientation booklet it says the "cell phones are permitted." What about laptops?

i'm bringing mine for the hotel... i dont know if you'll be able to do anything without wifi.. im guessing the academy has a password that just doesn't let anyone into their network.. i also dont see much time for laptop use during orientation... if your not going a few days ahead of orientation, i'd leave it at home..
