I'm just curious what others thoughts are, my daughter has completed her online application everything is in green status. She's received a Presidential and Representative Nomination, Medical status Qualified. She is a well rounded student, top 5% of her class, 3.6 unweighted GPA 4.1 weighted. Will graduate with about 12 college semester credits. She's been a part of the JROTC all 4yrs and now the Battalion Commander. Plays varsity sports, national honor society, student council, and community volunteer. There's only one thing I feel may hurt her chances getting accepted, her ACT/SAT scores. I'm wondering can her scores be the reason why she is not admitted or do they look more at the student holistically?
I understand there are other reviews still to be made but just wondering what her chances are.

SAT/ACT Scores? Of course, even with that piece of information there is no one on this forum that will say yea or nay. You can, though, compare her SAT/ACT scores with Class of 2018 profiles (available on line) and make your own judgment as to her competitiveness.

She has a composite of 23 and has taken several times. Im suggesting to her she take again in February, but I wonder if it will help.

Some kids do better on the SAT. Has she taken the SAT? Is there one coming up?

She has taken the SAT twice late Sophmore year and early Junior year not great scores. Then we had her focus on improving on ACT, from what I had read last year it was better to try and improve on ACT and she did bring up her score. I have worked with her on practice test online help like march2success but I think it comes down to it being a timed test which she has improved a little. Looks like I should work with her over the break and pull out all those testing tools and sites and see what happens in February.

I would suggest she take the ACT again and work on improving her which subscore is her worst and go from there.

The reality is 23 is too low. I'd go w/ SAT and get one of those fast prep books w/ strategies (Up Your Score comes to mind). What feedback is she getting from her RC? Feel free to email him/her and ask their thoughts. It could be that your daughter has something that is so stellar that they want her despite that score, but it's really lower than we generally see getting offered admission...unless she's a blue chip athletic recruit, she needs to keep taking the test.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but for lower ACT scores they usually close down the file. If not it means you still have a chance or they see potential.

I don't know too much about the USMAPs program, but I know they use it to fill up slots in categories like leader and athlete, so It is possible to get on of those as well!

I agree with mom3boys. She needs to work on getting the ACT up or scoring well on the SATs. I had a 29 composite on the ACTs (took it only once) as a direct admit, which I believe is around the average score. She seems to be doing well in the other areas, so I would shoot for at least a 27 composite score to be competitive. The reason why it is important to raise these scores is to show that she can be a self-learner because I can attest that there is a lot of self-learning here at West Point due to the "Thayer Method". I'm sitting here on Christmas Day reading a textbook on Electromagnetism to anticipate the struggle of an upcoming class :(

What major are you taking that you need electromagnetism?
