Pearl Harbor - December 7th, 1941

.
Our Midshipman daughter was born on this day, Dec 7, 2000 ….

Her first name is of Greek origin, and it means “Pearl” …. We didn’t know that her name had this Greek translation until several years later when she was a toddler …

I am heavy with emotion on this day every year …

One of the most moving places I have ever been. Over the course of 6 years and 2 tours there, many visits, both escorting senior foreign military, family and on my own - never failed to feel the stillness.

Yes A Fatal Mistake. Not so imminent They started in 1931 in Manchuria. They thought that they could accomplish another Port Arthur against a Western "power" although Russia at the time was not so powerful. There was no civilization lag, they over exstended. China was too easy and expansion into the Pacific with a weak european colonial presence occupied with a life or death struggle at home was easy. Everyone fights the same way. For home and Family to the Death.

Theodore Roosevelt recievied the Nobel Peace Prize 1906 "for his role in bringing to an end the bloody war recently waged between two of the world's great powers, Japan and Russia".

Who is "We"? It took Mother Nature with her helping hand twice in 1812 and 1941 to preserve "We". "We" declared war on Japan on 8, August 1945 two days after 6 August 1945. Way to jump on the pile "We". Dasvidaniya.

My second ship was home ported at Pearl Harbor. Another historic item of note is the USS Utah BB-31. She was sunk on 7 December and is also a war grave. The salvage attempts were not successful and the bodies never recovered. She rests on the other side of Ford Island. I saw it when we rounded Ford Island to onload weapons. It's a somber site. I also saw a marker in the courtyard of the Ford Island dispensary indicating where a Japanese bomb landed. It didn't explode but left a hole. There's also a marker where the USS Honolulu was moored and hit by a bomb but suffered only minor damage. If you visit there I recommend a walking tour of the base or at least a good windshield tour with occasional stops.
