Pentagon tracking suspected Chinese spy balloon over the US

The gov’t was finally shamed into shooting the damn thing down. How long would an American spy balloon last over China?

What an embarrassment. They constantly test our resolve, and we show how little we have.
China has no compunction about seizing non-military vessels from international waters:

Anonymous source on this happening before ? :)

It was a DoD press release.

Maybe they were referring to the Roosevelt Administration? ;-)

USNA midshipmen, many with amateur radio licenses, were launching tracker balloons from 1991 to 2018. The history of their activities is nicely summarized at http://www.aprs.org/balloons.html

I understand that the USNA amateur radio group W3ADO is reforming. So perhaps they'll soon be launching some yellow, smiley-face solar-powered tracker balloons that will ride the jetstream at 45,000+ feet.

Great read about the process!

That is interesting to read! A friend of ours is heavily involved in this process and has been down there the last few weeks. I remember hearing a quote that one of the news reporters said "the govemment says it's easier to recover over water anyway" and thinking to myself, for who? I asked him about that and he had nothing but some 4 letter mutterings to offer. It's been quite the challenge it sounds like!
