My DD is re-applying this year for class of 2019. The service academy rep for the congressman she received a nomination from last year offered to do a phone interview this year with the panel. The reason is she attends plan B school back east and we are from the Midwest. The interviews are on a Friday so she would have to miss class to travel home thurs night to be there for the interview on Friday. We are willing to do so however if phone interview would get the job done it would save on lots of $$ for flights and also missed class time. Has anyone else experienced this? Also would like to hear opinions over phone interview vs live? We are kind of hoping interview more of a formality at this point but will bring her home if feel like it is necessary.
    Any Thoughts? BGO's?

Can DD inquire if it is possible to Skype the call? Just a thought.

Not a BGO, but a retired military spouse. Many military kids because their parents are active duty do not live in their state that they are applying for a nomination. Think of all of those kids overseas, they are doing a phone interview.

I would not worry about this at all. They get it and it is more common than you think. I know several that got the nom. via a conference call. Plus, your DD received a nomination last year. I don't kmow your MOCs interview process, but I would think you can recall it last year. Many reps will use the interview process just to make sure the applicant matches up in person compared to on paper. Think back to when they interviewed last year did they interview 15 candidates or 50 for the SA they applied to? Remember many use the paper application as first step to whittle down the field and the interview is more about you losing it. She has the experience and will be 100 times more confident this year because she has lived through it already once.

Because she applied for and received a nom from this same MOC last year, I think a phone interview is fine.

If she had not received a nom last year, my advice would be to do it in person.

DS did a phone interview last year due to his travel schedule and received the principal nom. The key is to be as professional on the phone as in person. Dress for the phone interview like you would in person (reminds you to speak professionally) and find a quiet place with no interruptions. Since the panelsy be on speaker speak clearly so all can hear and wait until the question has finished before beginning to answer so she doesn't interrupt.

    Good luck!

I know for the PA Senators (and I think my MOC) it asks on the nom application if you need to do a phone/Skype interview and why. Maybe your nom package has that too? It would be much wiser to do a phone interview, especially if you got a nom last year.
