Plebe Privileges

Commandant of Midshipmen. The Superintendent is often called the Supt. So Supt, Dant and Dep Dant (Deputy Commandant) are the short slang titles Mids use for the upper 3 leaders of USNA.

Our Plebe says he "banked" both weekends and hopes to come home next weekend. Yay! He had too much work after the Colgate game and had duty past weekend. So grateful they get some time away and that they can save the weekends for when they can really relax. Hoping he is able to bring a friend or two with him.

There is also the long drawn-out "Soooooop" that almost sounds like boos when he is introduced. It can be disconcerting the first time you hear it. It's not negative.

We brought 4 home after the game. They headed downstairs immediately to ditch uniforms and change into the collection of left-behind blue rim USNA tees and shorts from sponsor generations past. Stampede upstairs where the chips and salsa are out on the counter. Phones brought out for mandatory social media work. Deploy to the big sofa, put a movie on ("Transporter 3"). Inhale chips and salsa, then start on 7-qt slow cooker steak chili, cheddar-Ortega chile cornbread and veg sticks with ranch dressing. Multiple refills. One gallon of milk gone and two gallons of raspberry iced tea. Three containers of Turkey Hill ice cream ravaged. Settle down on sofa with 3 boxer dogs to watch movie with phones in hand. All asleep within 15 minutes. Wake up around midnight, drink more milk, stagger off to bed downstairs in the "mid wing."
It's 11:20 AM. Haven't seen one of them yet.
The "fun" comes from not being in Bancroft or on the Yard, with waking up between cool sheets in a quiet house and a nice long shower to look forward to.
Naval Bagels bagels await, with anything they could want to put on them. There is a big bowl of strawberries and cantaloupe. The gallon OJ containers have been brought in from the garage refrigerator. At noon, they know the boxers are allowed downstairs to wake them in exuberant style, which they wait for, because they miss their dogs at home. Our boxers dive right in for a cuddle - and joyously remember each grad at the door years later.
For plebes, this is fun.
For upper class, we are the default setting if they don't have plans with friends, need some quiet time or need to get work done.
And it's fun for us too.

Capt. MJ bless you for being a sponsor parent. I know my Mid/Plebe loves his! Thank you for what you do!!

You sponsors are a special breed. Thanks for all you do. Mine loves hers and we feel better about being far away. The ability to briefly get away and unwind is soooo apreciated, as is the unconditional support and food! When we met ours, there were 2 visiting who had previously been mids (one a marine and one a pilot) to give advice, and a first year as well. Priceless

My parents have been sponsoring for years. I cant remember not having a MID around the house for a weekend or spending just a few hours since I can remember. The fun time is come Thanksgiving, when some plebes cant go home or trying to save monies for Christmas break, is having them over to the house. We normally get more plebes that are actually ours, but its fun just to have them come over and relax, eat and watch the games. Now that I have my drivers license is i join the family taxi squad for our plebes and others coming and going from all the 3 airports around. For me, its the stories that they tell and for the ones who are down, let them know that the AC year is half done

UCONN - NAVY Tomorrow. UCONN dropped Them from their schedule after NAVY beat them 45-17 and racked up 485 Yards. Should be a good game with UCONN improving. Now they are in the same conference and will have to play every year. Daughter at UCONN told me not to wear a lot of NAVY GEAR. I will try to comply.
