So usually during plebe summer, plebes get 2-3 phone calls during the 6 weeks of their training at the academy. My brother just graduated, but I remember him having at least 2 phone calls home. I overheard someone talking about how this years incoming class (2027) gets to call home every weekend now. Is that true? I'm wondering because every year they change things up.

They had their first call this past weekend.

Last year, they had two others, with one being closer to PPW. I believe that is the same this year.

It’s been three calls for the past several years (and perhaps much further back). I’d be surprised if it went to every weekend. That would be a logistical pain, not to mention a bit too “comfy” for the plebes.

By the way, Plebe Summer is seven weeks, not six. Most plebes realize that when they return from PPW and find the detailers rarin’ to go! It ain’t over ’til it’s over. 😉

The annual Plebe Summer Home pages on USNA.edu have this info:

Just spent three days on the yard for BGO training.

Heard Plebes in King Hall (they were screened so we couldn’t be super nosy, and their training could occur without distraction).

We saw running, chopping, heard cadence and march called. Saw noon formation, PEP, a medical space and those who needed it were being seen in quiet AC in private cubicles.

I saw them running to sports times, I saw smiles, heard them chatting amongst themselves when they could. I saw banter and teamwork. I saw Detailers doing their jobs in directing, redirecting, leading, supporting and encouraging.

Your plebes are in great hands.

I wasn’t sure because my brother talked to a detailer and they said they get phone calls every weekend now.

Blast from the past, PS 1994 note chin in chest position, no longer allowed?

It was called being "Braced Up" and was a standard part of plebe summer and most of plebe year for the older classes.

Nope, that was one of the first things I asked my kid, if they had to brace up. He said they don't allow that anymore. Even me, a 170 lb. tall lanky kid could make about 15 chins after repeatedly getting yelled at to do it!

It's called "Braced Up" and was a very common form of harassment /punishment... I can still hear it....
"I wanna see more chins Mr XXXXX..." (BTW, making multiple chins is a whole lot easier now than it was when I weighed 150 lbs)
For extra measure, there was the "flying brace" where you wrapped your fingers around the back of your neck and used your thumbs to push your chin in even further.

I don't think they did last year. My kid told me about it
No live stream but pictures starting to surface..Spoiler Alert, F Company won. I understand one of the perks of winning is they make plebe summer easy from now on. Get to wake up when you feel like it, only do PEP if you feel like it, make your bed if the spirit moves you, etc.

My kid's company had one of the recruited X-County kids last year. Needless to say, the kid smoked everyone in the longer events Same kid runs lows 7's for the mile and a half PRT.

Does anyone know if they still do chow calls before every meal year 'round? I'd heard from someone who graduated several years ago that they were done but not with the frequency of the old days. I did so many that I could still do one today, sad to say.

Bracing up was considered okay on the theory that it "improved your posture."
