I am a newbie, so bear with me if these are dumb questions.

When do the plebes find out their room & roomate(s) assignment?

Do they have a different room and/or roomate for Plebe Summer than they do for the rest of the year?

Can they contact their roomate(s) ahead of time?

You find out your room/roommates when you get there (I-Day), so you can't contact them ahead of time.

I believe everyone moves to a different room after plebe summer as you move from the plebe summer housing to your regular company area. Whether you keep the same roommates, are assigned new roommates, or can pick your own roommates depends on what company you are in.

Of course, I haven't been there/done that yet... this is all information I have gathered from other people. If anyone has firsthand information, I'm sure MIHOSER would love to hear it!

That is correct info. During plebe summer, all plebes and detailers live in one area of Bancroft. When the brigade reforms in August, plebes will move rooms and be housed with their companies......so they will be scattered throughout Mother B. There are some mids in Bancroft over the summer: those electing to (or needing to) take summer courses, those who have summer cruises right at USNA. Once the school year starts, plebes may or may not have one or more of the same room mates as they had during the summer. The answer to most questions at USNA is always "It Depends!"

What's been shared already seems true to what we've observed. Allow one expansion re: the AC year roommate situation.

The short answer of "It Depends!" is on the money. It depends upon one's company. Some allow for choosing roommates. Others assign them. Some don't change thoughout the year. Some change @ mid-year. Make that Mid mid-year. Most are 2 person room situations. Some are 3. Ours has had the same 2 roommates throughout. Roommate flexibility is much more constraining for women, simply because there are so many fewer female Mids. And much more drama. :argue1::hammer::stretcher:

So there is no definitive answer to this. Beyond, as Jenny notes ..."It Depends!":rocket:

One of the "joys" of being in the military and at a SA is that you have either zero or limited choice of roommates. You deal with it.

And, no, unlike civilian colleges, there is no attempt to match up plebe summer roommates based on interests, etc. The only thing you can be sure of is that your roommate will be of the same gender as you.

My sons, just finishing their Plebe year, informed me that they were told that the Brigade is going to return to 36 companies (instead of 30) after next year. That means that about 15 (plus or minus a few) from each company will be siphoned off to create the 6 additional companies.

Apparently, the academy has been wanting to do this for quite some time. This will effect the Class of 2014 (after their Plebe year) but will have no effect on the Class of 2015.

Naturally, the 15-or-so from each company will be distributed equally between the 3 classes. Probably 5 third-class, 5 second-class, and 5 first-class will leave their current company. The newly arriving Class of 2015 will be distributed amongst the 36 companies upon arrival to fill-out the Brigade, about 34 plebes per company.

Room sizes in Bancroft vary from 2-6 occupants. DD was in a 3-person room during PS, a 2-person room 1st academic semester, and a 5-person room during 2nd academic semester. All of those room & roommate assignments were beyond her control.

At the end of Plebe year, Mids in her company were allowed to choose roommates for the next year (so long as no one was left out, etc). Youngster year she has been in a 2-person room. Same roommate, BIGGER ROOM, for next year!!!! RHIP!!!!
