My daughter was reviewing the preliminary application that is on the USNA website for 2024 (she is class of 2025). there is a section that says remarks and additional comments under the high school ranking. What exactly is to be included in this section? She and I were thinking there would be an essay as part of the preliminary application but we don't see this? She wants to be ready to go on January 3, when her class year opens. Thank you for your help!

Great job in looking ahead. The Summer Seminar application will require the submission of a personal statement, a 1,000 character essay. See the USNA website details for an explanation of what is asked for in the Summer Seminar application https://www.usna.edu/Admissions/Programs/NASS.php#fndtn-panel1-Steps-For

From the USNA website:
If you have applied for our Summer Seminar program you do not need to submit a preliminary application, as they are the same application.

As USNA uses the Summer Seminar application as the "Preliminary Application" for prospective candidates then yes a personal statement will be
submitted as part of the Summer Seminar application. But for those candidates who submit a preliminary application after the Summer Seminar application window closes then the Preliminary Application used at that time does not require a personal statement.

See USNA website regarding the Preliminary Application https://www.usna.edu/Admissions/Apply/index.php#fndtn-panel2-Steps-for

When looking at the Preliminary Application on the website the top of the page does contain a link to click for Instructions.
The Instructions do not specifically address the section titled "Remarks or Additional Comments" so I interpret that section to
simply be an additional section for comments regarding anything a prospective candidate may wish to explain.

I hope you find the above helpful.

ok thank you so much!!! that makes perfect sense - she will be applying to Summer seminar so she was just looking at the prelim app - which is different! got it!!!

thanks

also I am the same person as USNAhopeful2021 - just a different kid going through the process so I set up a new account - did not want to confuse you SLHSD....thanks again for your quick response

There is no need to overthink the "Preliminary Application." This is simply a screen to determine if a potential candidate meets minimum requirements to be an Official Candidate with the opportunity to submit an application. Think of it as an initial screen. Nobody here can tell you what that minimum requirement is (it appears to be somewhat variable), but its pretty safe to say that the bar is set very low and anyone below the bar is unlikely to be competitive for Admission anyway.

With respect to the Additional Comments section, this gives a candidate the opportunity to explain an anomaly in the his/her academic background ..for example., 800/800 SAT , 4.0 GPA and class rank of lower half, one could explain they attend a special school for Einstein's offspring. I would suspect that most candidates don't have to put anything in the Additional Comments section.

Finally, as noted above ...the NASS application serves as pre-application, and does have a short essay section.

When our son applied to summer stem, he put in the remarks that his small rural school offered little to no STEM opportunities beyond basic coursework. This was at the suggestion of an admissions person he met at a forum.
