Protramid per diem

Hmm Wonder if my mid was with him. He ate Mexican in Coronado last night too ;-)
LOL my baby ensign is growing up!

He called me the other day telling me how good Mexican restaurants are in California.

From the kid who wouldn’t let his sister have tacos or nacho cheese growing up because they smell.

For great Mexican food, suggest they go to Miguel's Cocina in Coronado (or elsewhere.). I love this restaurant which is pretty good for a chain.

In our days, we got "summer pay." I THINK it consisted of our normal monthly pay dispensed all at once so we had it for the summer -- could be wrong about that as it was a LONG time ago. I do know we got paid up front and had to budget for the summer.

During my 1/C summer, I had a 5-week internship in Europe (hey, someone had to do it). USNA gave me an airline ticket, a room at the Q and ZERO money. They forgot.:rolleyes2:

While I could (and did) eat most meals in a government facility, it was gonna be rough when they sent us TDY to London for a long WE and to Heidelberg for a week (like I said, it was tough duty). Remember that credit cards weren't ubiquitous in those days and weren't widely accepted. Most people used "Traveler's Cheques" for ex-US travel (young folks on this site -- look it up in Wiki!). The USMA and USAFA cadets had wads of cash and I had . . . nothing. Thankfully, one of the officers to whom I was assigned managed to contact USNA and get some funds released. It was about $500 for the summer.

Summer money was enough to get by but not nearly enough to do all the stuff you wanted to do. Probably intentional.

> Keep them poor and wanting and they stay out of trouble !

My how times have changed ! It's so nice to get off the plane in a foreign country, go to an autoteller and withdraw your currency of choice. A far cry from taking a Traveler's check, trying to find an open bank, and converting to local currency before you could do anything.

I had a three week, COX Fund study tour in Germany .... about half of it was official business (visiting German Government, German Naval Academy, German Mountain Warfare school , travel into West Berlin (with Checkpoint Charlie visit into East Berlin for a day (in Uniform). THe rest of the trip was our group of 10 ish Midshipman, a couple professors and a LT just doing touristy things. It was a good deal ..on the flight over in a German Air Force 707 (rotating German soldiers back and forth from US for technical training on a weekly basis), a good German beer was $.35 and bottle of water was $.50 --of course it didn't take astute financial planning to figure out what we did on the trip ! My recollection is the total trip cost me about $300-- divided roughly equal between food, beer, and gedunk and trinkets.

Times have changed. My son spent three weeks in Italy, Germany, and Austria for aerospace. The group did a lot of touristy things - eating and drinking.

My son never had to ask me for money and had enough to buy a nice Italian suit in Milan.

Mine is spending all his money on Uber/Lyft. They have gone cliff jumping several times and apparently a trip to LA is in the works for the weekend. I guess they are having fun.
this is why the Mids need to know about and use the San Diego Trolley System. The Trolley runs several lines and goes to most places downtown, down to South Bay, and out East County. It can get them pretty close to where they may want to go and then they can Uber from there and it will be much cheaper. If they want to go over to bridge to Coronado and they are at 32nd Street Base they can take the trolley to the Embarcadero and then take the Ferry over to Coronado Island ($8.00 each direction and much cheaper than an Uber ride) If they are at Camp Pendelton they can take the Coaster down to the Santa Fe Depot in downtown San Diego and then take trolley line from there to wherever they want to go. Ubering can get expensive in San Diego especially with the gas prices over $5.00 per gallon.
