Quartermaster fees?

Hi everyone! This may only pertain to the Senior Military Colleges, I'm not sure but figured I'd ask here.

My son has been awarded an NROTC scholarship for VMI, which is a SMC. All students who attend participate in one of the ROTC branches. They wear uniforms every day, etc etc.

He has also been awarded a Call to Duty scholarship that covers his room and board at the school. But it does not cover "Quartermaster fees" which includes laundry, pressing, haircuts, uniforms, etc. The email indicated that the ROTC scholarships also do not cover those items.

My understanding was that it would?

Anyone have experience with this and know for sure?

Hi there! VMI '21 and Navy advanced standing recipient. First off, a huge congratulations on being awarded the scholarship and choosing to attend VMI. I used the GI Bill to attend, so though not identical situations, it is close enough for government work (I'll see myself out).

For your questions - that is correct, those fees are not paid for by the scholarship. That being said - since your son is receiving both scholarships, it may be worth asking Financial Aid/Comptroller/Smith Hall if there is a way to roll the Call to Duty scholarship into paying for UMA/haircuts/QM/Laundry. The NROTCU VMI page is also full of great info about the benefits of being a scholarship recipient, in terms of stipends and allowances.

Please let me know if you have any other questions, and Fly Navy!

Thank you for your reply and congrats to you for your own accomplishments!

Unfortunately, it was Financial Aid that specifically stated the Call to Duty scholarship didn't cover the QM fees. He's heading down next month to interview for the Institute Scholar program and there's a scholarship associated with that, so maybe that will cover the QM fees?

If not... At the end of the day, he's also going to receive a Pell Grant, so one way or another, he'll be covered.

He's planning on working part time after his rat year, possibly lifeguarding at the VMI aquatic center.

Thanks again for your response!

I believe the reason you can't apply the ROTC scholarship to those costs is a contracted or a scholarship cadet will receive a monthly stipend and the annual uniform allowance. Their are also other opportunities to work after breakout. I did library assistant which gave time to study in the evening while sitting the circulation desk. Cadet waiters were another option.

I always thought it was because non SMC schools don't have these costs, so they are not considered. Basically the ROTC scholarship covers the same things for every school. Tuition or R&B, stipend, and book allowance. That is it. Makes it uniform across the country.

Yeah but interestingly, tuition from school to school varies widely. Tuition at a smaller school will be nowhere near as high as tuition from Harvard or even VMI, where my son will attend.

So it isn't exactly uniform, kwim?

The allocated choices that are paid is uniform, but the costs do very between schools. Though I don't think the point of the uniformity is to make what is given as being completely equal. The tuition of the school is the tuition of the school. The military doesn't have any say or control over that. Just because the military is paying more for a Mid in Harvard than another Mid at a state school doesn't mean the in state Mid is getting cheated. Costs are just more expensive at Harvard. Just like the monthly allowance is the same across the country. $250 a month goes alot farther in Lexington, Va than it does in Los Angles, Ca. Does that mean a Mid at Los Angeles is getting cheated? I don't think so.

There are pros and cons for choosing a school, but what is covered under the NROTC scholarship is consistent across the country. So a future Mid knows what is covered and what is not no matter what school they choose.
