I have heard about LOA's, but I haven't heard how an applicant receives one. Does it come in the mail or on email?

Almost everything is done via email. There are the few occasions where it is presented in person. My understanding is the ONLY thing mailed is the appointment certificate.
With that being said, LOAs are not the goal and I would not concentrate or worry about one...if it happens, then it does.

My daughter received an email a week ago. I am assuming this is an LOA. Can someone confirm this. I couldn't find an example online.

    The email wording starts with:

We are pleased to advise you that the Admissions Board has recommended you for admission to the United States Naval Academy with the Class of 2021. You are guaranteed an offer of appointment if your remaining admissions requirements are satisfactorily met. You should be proud of your outstanding accomplishments as you have earned an opportunity to join one of the country's premier officer training programs. As the undergraduate college of the Navy and Marine Corps, the Naval Academy will prepare you to become a leader in the Naval Service and provide an experience unmatched by any other college or university.

Yep that is it. If you log into the CIS portal, it will use the actual words Letter of Assurance. How do I know? My daughter JUST got that same email! Wowee Wow Wow.

Just wondering, did both of your daughters complete their medical examinations with dodmerb and receive an "ok" from them prior to receiving the LOA?

Review of applications by the Admissions Board or consideration for LOAs are independent of DODMERB.

So the LOAs for 2021 admission cycle have already started coming in? I was under impression that the first Board meeting until late in August or early September... I wonder how many students have already received LOAs... We will never know.

At least last year, the LOA included a list of outstanding actions that needed to be completed. For my DD it included Passing the CFA, Obtaining a Nomination, Passing DoDMeRB, and one or two other items.

Though she was recruited for 2 sports at USNA, neither coach had yet to identify her as a 'blue chip' before her LOA arrived.

I would venture to guess at this point the only nominations that have been made are Presidential.

You can easily drive yourself crazy trying to figure out who gets LOAs when/why and who does not. This is a long cycle and it is best to be ready to hear nothing until March/April.

Also, there was a poster here last year that claimed to have an LOA that did not receive a nomination (that might have been on the USAFA forum)

    Congratulations!
Are you being recruited or do you think you got an LOA because of your academics?

It is interesting, the ins and outs and whys/why nots of LOAs and even appointments. DS has a LOA from USMA with the file still pending a few things, has been CPR with Navy for a month...crickets. Now I know its still very early in the process but it's still interesting.

When my son received his LOA a few years ago via USMail, there were checked boxes on the letter that indicated which outstanding criteria needed to be fulfilled before he would reeive his appointment. In his case it was just DODMERB approval which came in a few days later. Yes, he was an athlete-recruited, but definitely not a blue chip. He did have a Presidential nom, so his actual appointment arrived even before moc interviews were scheduled. He was lucky. To this day he has no idea why he received the LOA over some of his stellar classmates. It can seem so random so don't overthink it. Just stay the course.

Although I'm a newbie to all this, it seems to me that getting an LOA this early in the fall is just incredibly random and lucky. So many others will be getting LOAs during the fall. For my kid with the early LOA - no nomination in hand. Working on those applications now! Not completed with medical review. Everything else, including the BGO interview is completed. Attended NASS, STEM, and had a CVW last fall. She is an athlete but not a blue chip as far as we are aware. Her academics are very strong. Very good test scores, incredibly good grades (ranked first with both weighted and unweighted GPAs in a class of over 350 in a highly ranked suburban high school), A+ grades in courses like Advanced Calculus, that she takes at a regional pull-out STEM school. Even attended an Ivy League college summer course this past summer on full scholarship. We do not live in one of those super-competitive districts that I read about!
