My son is applying to multiple service academies. He has has a broken foot (8 years ago) and a broken wrist (10 years ago). My question is do we need to get a letter from the docs that saw him for the broken bones or can he get clearance from his General Practitioner clearing him for all activities?
Does he need clearance at all since they were so long ago?

It depends-If he does get DQ'ed through the DODMERB, they mask ask for AMI, which is additional medical info. Through that AMI you can send in letters from his docs that confirm the treatment was successful and he hasn't returned bc of flare ups or anything. It all depends on the DODMERB though. I'm assuming he might have to get a waiver, but if you can prove he's fine now thru the AMI he should be ok.

Thanks! He has had zero issues with any previous broken bones. Trying to get ahead of the game (proactive vs reactive). Is it better to wait to see if a waiver is needed? Or can I jump on that now?

DS had a broken foot in elementary school. He reported when it happened and the length of treatment and the outcome. Date of injury, 6-8 weeks, fully healed, no further treatment or issues. For him, no follow up information was needed, it probably depends of how severe, if surgery was needed, how it healed and if there were any continuing issues.

IMO, the best thing anyone can do in preparation for applying, as far as medical goes, is to make sure all your open-ended records are buttoned up with your provider. I don’t mean getting physical possession of all your files, but rather if you had a procedure, or treatment plan that wasn’t completed/closed out, to get that finalized. For example, went to therapy, and just stopped going.

My son had a jones fracture in 8th grade playing basketball. Forgot to include it in his application, and alerted the doctor to update his medical.

He received communication about it from DoDMERB - they thought the doctor found it. My son explained how he alerted the doctor. It didn’t affect him - he played three sports and AAU after.

They didn’t do him for it.

DS broke his collarbone in 7th grade. Had a plate and screws permanently installed. Went on to be 3 sport athlete in HS with zero problems. When SA application time came and after reading about others experiences here on SAF, we decided to be proactive.
Scheduled appointment with the surgeon who worked on DS and had a full evaluation of his recovery and the surgeon provided a letter declaring DS was 100% recovered with zero limitations. We provided this letter to DODMERB as well as declaration of the prior injury and had no problem from them. Was the letter necessary? We may never know, but again it was a proactive approach that possibly saved a hiccup and delay to medical qualification.

He will probably have to fill out the orthopedic questionnaire. Have those medical files ready just in case they ask for them. It doesn't sound like a DQ, just be prepared.

My DD had a broken collar bone; broken foot; broken elbow and broken nose. The only records DODMERB requested were related to a knee injury:) She was cleared after all records related to her knee were provided!
