Questions Thread

this might be an overly detailed question but I had a question after reading through the instructions for admitted applicants booklet. I know that USMA issues you a lot of personal hygiene stuff when you get to Beast, but what about shower shoes/ flip-flops? I remember seeing cadets with them on during my overnight visit and i was wondering if I should bring them in my Beast duffle bag. Thanks.

You are issued shower shoes.

I know you are responsible for your own PT during the school year, can you run with music as a plebe?

questions

1. What is some advice on how one should go about asking teachers for a letter of reccomendation?

2. When does one begin security clearance forms? Is it not until if you he/she is accepted?

3. If you put down on the security clearance forms that you previously used marijuana for a very short period of time, but never used it again, will you USMA take away your appointment?

1. Ask them in person and hand them a resume and give them a timeframe on when you need it by.

2. After you're appointed, but you do discuss any legal trouble as part of the application. And admissions could possibly search more stuff (facebook, etc.) before they give you an appointment

3.You have to answer that question when you are filling out the candidate personal data record or the DODMERB forms (one of those) during the application. Ask Mr. Mullen about it. It has been discussed before in the DODMERB forum.

1) I posted in the Letters of Recommendation thread a few down exactly how I went about it.

2) no idea when, I'm accepted and haven't been given any security clearance forms.

3) I'm pretty sure you have had to mention that before in your DoDMERB forms and such.... I don't know whether that would be grounds for taking your appointment away or simply not giving you one on the first place.

Outside you may NEVER run with music due to the danger of being hit by a car or something. Inside, if you are running around Arvin gym (stairs or on the small track) you may run with music, plebes included.

This remains true in the real Army as well. Headphones are only permitted while exercising indoors.

Yeah, I try to be clear when prospective people ask me about the military because TRADOC is a different system with plenty of stupid rules, but some of them do carry over (not implying this one is stupid, I've seen people on Fort Hood not follow the rule and almost die).

That's what I expected. Our cross country team has the same rule, so it won't be a big deal for me. Thanks guys!

So I know parents are supposed to come to R-day and A-day. Which one takes precedence over the other? R-day seems as if it would just to say goodbye which my parents wouldn't want to fly up to NY for that. Any thoughts?

We did both. It was worth it to us to see the Oath Ceremony at the end of R-Day. DH had never visited WP before and enjoyed taking a tour and exploring. A-Day was nice in that we were able to spend relaxing time together as a family.

We not only did both, but also did the March Back.

We flew from the West Coast - pricey - but we have family nearby, too.

If you had to pick only one, that would be A-Day. Here is a synopsis of our experiences.

R-Day: the goodbye is short and sweet; the oath at the end of the day shows a transformation that is a sight to behold.

March Back: tired cadets finally able to put the Beast behind them

A-Day: 4400 cadets that keep coming onto the parade field in waves. What a moving moment.

And then there is the Army-Navy game, something that everyone should experience at least one. We're already planning the next one for Dec 2011. This past one in Philly was great.

Next up: PPW in March and Sandhurst in April.

Between the 2, I'd say Aday over Rday. Your cadet will be allowed extended walking privileges to go off campus with you to go out to eat and to your hotel on both Saturday and Sunday (not over night).

What do DH and DS mean?

Using context I can figure it out DH refers to husband and DS to son but why use those terms? I see them everywhere on here

I also wondered the same thing abeastlybeast! I guessed the same thing you did and I finally decided to google it and it means "Dear Husband/Son/Daughter". I suppose its just common slang on threads, but since I am new to threads, the slang is new to me as well. :)
