Congrats to all.

Coast Guard ‘swabs’ get first blast of discipline

295 recruits report for training

June 27, 2011

New London, Conn. — Scorching summer temperatures arrived just in time to greet 295 U.S. Coast Guard Academy students on their first day of training. Five Eastern Connecticut residents said they were prepared to take the abuse of Mother Nature as well as their drill instructors.

“I’m taking things one step at a time,” said “Swab” Shane Sullivan of Gales Ferry, a 2010 Ledyard High School graduate. “I’m learning that paying attention to detail is very important. Our instructors are here to make us better, not put us in any danger.”

Upper-class cadets were busy hollering at the first-year students, known as “swabs,” inculating the Coast Guard’s core values of honor, respect and devotion to duty. The swabs began the New London academy’s demanding seven-week training course.

R-Day, 27 June

What a great day for our men and women Swabs - They looked great in their new uniforms and shaved heads. The cadre are working their magic - they already had the Swabs marching in step as they entered the parade field under the watchful eyes of the parents of the Class of 2015. The CGA put on a great program today with the wonderful assistance of a great Parents Association.

Our Swabs are in good hands and I pray that Flag Day will come real soon. GO BEARS, GO BEARS, GO BEARS!
