I've been thinking about this for a while now. My normal haircut is already a short buzz. The one thing I always notice is that whenever my hair gets buzzed, I get thousands of sharp, very annoying little spikes of hair all over my face, neck and collar that stay there until I can shower, and stay imbedded in whatever shirt I have on for weeks. It drives me crazy and I can't imagine going through R-Day like this.

I haven't tried it yet, but my question is do you think growing my hair out for R-Day will make the buzz cut any cleaner (i.e. no sharp spikes), or does it not make any difference?

Either way I'm ok with sucking it up and dealing with it, but I'm just curious.

    Thanks in advance

    Won't make a difference.

If you're really worried, shave your head with a Bic the day before.

Honestly, though, those hairs will be the least of your worries.

The "Instructions for Candidates" PDF states that candidates arriving on R-Day should not have their head shaved. Are we permitted to shave our head completely the day before and skip the haircut on R-Day?

Shaving your head that takes away from the fun! Is crying a reoccurring thing cause I have seen a few pictures of it?

Here's the answer to your question, clearly stated. I think it's all part and parcel of the team building experience.

If a person isn't used to it, the pressure on the scalp from a rough buzz cut can sometimes cause a person to involuntarily "cry."

The military haircutters aren't gentle at all and press down hard too. They usually miss a few spots as well

Yeah lol I only ask because scoutpilot mentioned shaving one's head the day before. The regulations for hair may have changed since his R-Day or he's just setting beat_navy up

The gals at the barber shop are great. They'll take good care of you over 4 years.

my mom's a cosmetologist, and i can tell you from what i've observed that if you keep your hair long and cut it, you won't have annoying prickly bits all over. the longer your hair, the easier it'll be to brush off. (I'd say atleast 2 inches long, if you want to avoid the whole "hair in my face and in the nitty gritty of my shirt)

plus i hear the barbers hold a bet every year of how much hair they collect, so the more hair you have to offer, the better! heh

Different people have different types of hair as well. Some coarser, and some finer. The coarser hair usually gets prickly when short.

I've had very short coarse hair for the past year and a half and can attest to initial prickliness. However over time it smoothed out.
