What do you do on R-day exactly as a new cadet? I know there is some sort of physical test (CFA? PFT?) and the saying goodbyes during the morning. Of course reporting to the cadet in the red sash and sizing clothes. But outside of that what do you actually do? Is there a presentation? Do you just practice marching?

I was able to participate in mock Rday a couple years ago. There are many issue points (places to stop and get issued gear), medical screenings, oaths, reporting to the cadet in the red sash, storing gear in your room, and practicing for the parade later in the day. The earlier report times have much more marching. There is no more CFA....that is an application requirement. You will not have to hurl that basketball again.

During Beast you'll work on prep for the APFT...you'll take that a few times.

as posted above in the video: pull-ups

It's a good measure of upper body strength and height/weight proportion. If you get there "fat" and can't do any pull-ups, you are going to draw some unwanted attention. If you can do a few, maybe less of a problem. Not sure how they factor it in, though.

And they are cadence pull-ups, from a dead hang. No kipping. Practice!

Hopefully you will have improved on the CFA (run, push-ups, curl-ups and pull-ups) you report as part of your application.

What happens if you already have your hair short, as in 1/8th-1/2in? Do they leave it be? Shave the rest off? Are cadet candidates with already short hair viewed as being suck ups? Just curious... I may need to grow it out a little, should the time come.

I think in the new cadet packet it specifically says "Do not arrive with a shaved head," nothing more specific. Watch the video above. They shave it really short and some male new cadets arrived with longish hair. I don't know that anyone cares. Everyone's going to sit in the chair. Caveat: I don't know the info for females so someone who has gone through it or had a daughter go through it can respond.

Is West Point like Navy in the sense that they require chopping it to chin length? Or must you be able to have it up in a certain amount of time? As much as I'd like to keep my hair, if I have to get it shorter, I'd rather get it cut now and get used to dealing with it than learning how to on R-Day.

Keep it now everyone will get it cut on r day so you won't be singled out. The nice thing about a shaved head is it doesn't take any maintenance

Ameisen_zug, at last check, females keep their hair at WP, but have to be able to put it up to meet uniform standards.
