The letters of recommendation needed for the VP and Presidential nominations are to be sent directly to the Academies ..... but is there just supposed to be one letter from each recommender even though the rec letter is intended for consideration for two separate nomination sources (Vp & Pres)?

Also is there a limit on how many individual recommendation letters are to be sent to the Academies for the VP & Presidential nominations? Our senators & congressman all wanted only 3, but we may want to have an additional one for USAFA and USNA for a total of four rec letters to each.

    Thanks y'all!

Do you really need a LOR for a presidential nomination? I thought it was an entitlement.

    hopefully no

I do not believe so, but may be incorrect.
Lugigi, We applied for the VP nom and the paper we downloaded directly off VP Biden's website said send all information to the Academy to which you are applying. It said nothing about letters of recommendation needed, in fact the paper said to send NOTHING to the VP Nomination committee except the paper downloaded asking for the VP nom.

The Presidential, I agree with you, it was a shoe in if you feel into the criteria, however I believe(correct me if I am wrong) even though many will be eligiable, the Presidential nom only goes to a specific number. Not infinate.

Everyone eligible (list below) will receive a Presidential Nomination. But there will only be one hundred appointments from this category. There is no requirement for a LOR for a Presidential. Form letter for the AFA is found in the "Instructions to Precandidate Kit" on page 10. I can't find it on the AFA web site anymore.

    Presidential and Military Affiliated
The Presidential category may have up to 100 appointments. This category is reserved for children of career military personnel. In addition, there are other military-affiliated categories including:

■Children of Deceased or Disabled Veterans
■Children of Military or Civilian Personnel in Missing Status
■Children of Medal of Honor Recipients
■Air Force Regular and Reserve Components
■Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC) and Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC)
    ■Honor Military and Naval Schools
■International Students Number of Nominations is unlimited.

All I needed to receive my presidential nomination was the completed form and my dad's military retirement papers. For the VP nom, just send the one page application to the Vice President's office. No letters of recommendation or essays needed :thumb:.

Both application formats I saw for VP and Pres nominations refer to letters of recommendation going directly to the academies.......

The applications specifically say NOT to send anything other than the 1 page nomination applications to the VP and President. The academies themselves handle who gets the nominations once the applications have been submitted. Since you need to submit LOR's for the academy applications, they use the same ones to consider you for a VP nomination.

If you are eligible for the Presidential nomination (parents were career military), then you WILL receive a Presidential nom as long as you apply.

From what I understand, 5 candidates for each academy will receive a Vice Presidential nomination, but only if they were highly qualified and unable to get a nomination from a member of congress. Hope this helps :thumb:.

I guess I am confused - sorry! I was commissioned via ROTC ages ago ('76) so I am not entirely familiar with this process.

I know there are LORs required for our senators/congressional reps and we send/deliver these LORs directly to their offices, but these LORs also need to be sent to the Academies (Admissions Offices) as well, correct?

Are you doing this research for a son or daughter?

No. The applications for members of congress and the applications for the academies are completely separate.

Don't mean to sound snippy but does that matter if it's a son or daughter?

OK - so separate LORs do need to be done & sent then. Thanks much!

From your posts, it sounded like YOU were a service academy candidate. I should have phrased my question "Since you are already commissioned, are you doing this research for one of your children?"

:shake:Okay I understand now! Ironically just before I graduated from USC and was commissioned, I was asked if I wanted to apply to attend the Academy since they were opening it up to women...I had always been interested in attending until I was told I would have to start as a freshman/doolie!!! So I reluctantly said no and started my AF career!
