Restaurant for Parent's Weekend

DS would like to go into the city during parents weekend (Saturday) and go to a restaurant on the water (in NYC)......Any ideas???
I'm going to be honest here and tell you that despite Manhattan's seafaring history and lots of riverfront property - there really aren't that many restaurants on the waterfront.

A question: Where are you staying for Parents' Weekend, and will you have a car? (I never recommend driving in Manhattan if you can help it.)

I second the recommendation of The Water Club, but it is pricey. Beautiful location on the East River, great food. If you're staying on the Island you can take the LIRR into Penn Station and then get a cab.

A second possibility (although I have never eaten there, but have been by it): Battery Gardens at the south tip of Manhattan. The location is fantastic; the online reviews of the food and service range from one extreme to the other. Again, it's pricey - but there's nothing in Manhattan that comes cheap unless you venture out of the tourist areas. (DH knows a really good hole-in-the-wall Italian restaurant just above the Lower East Side....) A train into Penn Station and a ride on the #1 subway will get you there easily.

Third possibility: Pier 17 at the South Street Seaport. Again, great location. Unfortunately, there are lots of chain restaurants and the Seaport itself has had financial difficulties. Harbour Lights looks promising (and it's been there for a number of years), but again I can't claim any familiarity with it. For this location, I'd take the train into Penn Station and then take the #2 or #3 to Fulton Street or Wall Street.

You can also try the Yankee Clipper is you are going to the South Street Seaport. It is about a block from the water at the foot of John Street on the South side of the street. Its Irish Pub Fair/seafood is very good and during the week it is a wall street hangout. Some time ago they had an OTB parlor in the basement and you could bet the horses while having lunch or dinner. With the demise of OTB I doubt that would be the case anymore.
If it's on the water you're looking for I will stay with my first recommendation- The Water Club, simply the best on the water location in NYC.
But if you choose to venture to the seaport, try the Yankee Clipper.
170 John St
2D
(between Front St & South St)
New York, NY 10038

Make a reservation here too.

Here's one more thought for you. If you like Italian and you are going to stray from your on the water venue, treat yourself to dinner at Il Vagabondo. This is one of those NY experiences that you won't find anywhere else. The food is fabulous and they play Bocce in the basement. It is such a fun place. http://www.ilvagabondo.com/ It's on 62nd st on the east side between First and Second Ave. Again not cheap, nothing is in NY, but definitely worth the trip uptown from Penn Station. DO make a reservation.
Have Fun!

Check out the Seaport for sure, but skip Pier 17- it is a mall- for good food in the Seaport area check out the following-

Cowgirl Seahorse
or
Les Halles For nicer french brasserie

For steak-
Near the seaport MarcJoseph's - two words- Bacon Steak.....
Near KP- Bryant and Cooper mentioned above, or in the Manhattan near Penn Station my favorite is Keens Chophouse

Other good stops near KP-
Sushi- Hinata on Bond St
Low key, tasty Italian- Aunt Bella's in Little Neck
Turkish- Kebab House in Little Neck
Greek- Greek Islands in Little Neck

And for adventure dinner- head to Flushing for some amazing asian food- PM me for recommendations...the closest you can get to what your sons and daughters sea year will be like!

CG,
What's good in Flushing? I'm on a regular run into flushing bay now right off college point blvd. I'm only about a mile from main street and would definitely make the hike for some authentic Asian food. I'm always on the hunt for something like Amy's and this part of town definitely reminds me of Kaoishung.

Here are some of my favorites-

Xian Famous Foods- Amazing hand pulled noodle soups, and a cumin lamb "burger" that is amazing. Not much for atmosphere, but definitely has that Kaoshiung feel!

Little Pepper- Really good, really spicy.... they have a hot pot thingy sort of like a chinese fondue that they put on your table and cook stuff in- I have no idea how to order it, only had it when I could point to it on another table....

For good Malaysian try Sentosa

Let me know when you're over there- I'll meet you for lunch or dinner.

Couple great restaurants where you can get a lot of good chow for the money:
- in Queens (Glendale) try "Zum Stamtisch" for a lot of good German food (and German Beer).
And- if you are willing to go into the city:he greatest deli in the world is on Houston Street -KATZ Deli is a NYC tourist destination in its own right and it deserves to be as the pastrami is to die for. :thumb:

A favorite of ours is Harbor Deli, 306 Main Street, Port Washington. 516-883-9597 www.harbordelipw.com. It's a short drive from KP and the selection of deli sandwiches and salads is extensive. The board displays 64 Harbor Creations and they use Boars Head meats. They also deliver but I don't know how far. We enjoyed their fare over graduation weekend and will surely miss that place! DS enjoyed Mangia Bene at Great Neck, I think he and friends dined there more than Delano first class year! www.mangiabeneofgreatneck.com. Great pizza and they give a midshipman discount.

Thank you Everyone!!! This list of restaurants is awesome!! I think I gained 5 lbs reading it!!

I have to admit....I didn't have clue where Kaoshiung was (Taiwan for anyone else who doesn't know!!), had to look it up and the thought of DS going there possibly for sea year just totally amazes me. It was definitely a "KP Moment" I think we will definitely have to try some of the asian spots!

Thanks again.....and any more suggestions are always welcome...My other 2 DS's and I will be there 6 days!!!

LOL - Just talked to our DS today after a run to Panama and Honduras, and his Spanish was better than anyone else's so he got to be the translator. He was pleased that the food that showed up on his plate looked and tasted like what he thought he was ordering.:thumb:

Kaoishung was actually my favorite port in Asia, once you got past the smog and the smell. The monkey outside Tiger Bar was pretty cool, the cab ride alone was an adventure and you have to love Fong. I assume he was already a fixture by the time CMakin, deepdraft and Jasper were cadets. Incidentally I heard he is really ill and was retiring to Canada or something like that. Apparently he is also some kind of real estate mogul and a multi-millionaire ... Who knew.

I've heard enough stories that are unrepeatable (don't worry Moms and Dads, none were from cadets) but my most interesting experience there was drinking cobra blood with the QMED from one of the snake shops. It was his 80th birthday and he didn't look a day over 55. He attributed it to his yearly cobra cocktail so how could I refuse. There must have been something to it because most people are surprised when they find out how old I am.

Kpengineer, great story for my morning coffee. (yuck) It would seem to me there is a million dollar idea there for supplements. Put it in a morning beet juice and it would look just like a glass of blood. DH and I got into juicing a couple years ago for about a week,,,,anyway, beets when juiced have a weird texture and incredible color! Good tip for all vampire fans for Holloween there. Warning, a big glass of beet juice and your voice diminishes for a few minutes.
So to come back to topic does anyone know of a great juice bar on Long Island?

Wow. all these great places (you guys are making me hungry!... ok, cobra blood and beet juice excepted)

We had SUCH great plans for/from our Plebe Candidate. Indoc had been well planned and well executed (meaning, our PC was a bit tired AND sleep deprived).

Basically, once we fed the kid, he sat in the back seat and got quiet.... 3 minutes later, SNORING (and not little polite snores either :) ). So, we took him to the hotel, shoveled him into the bed, and he pretty much slept, ate some candy, slept, ate some lunch , slept, swam in the pool, and slept. So, just saying -- stay flexible... you may only get 1 good meal in with the kid.

Parents: We had to hustle to make it to the airport. The SMARTEST folks we saw were those that toured the museum, walked around Great Neck, didn't leave until the next DAY... or take a vacation day or two and go see the City. D'oh! we didn't even THINK of it. There's LOTS to do.

I don't recall Fong, but that was also many years ago. Kaoshiung was okay. I was only there a couple of times and that was when I was on a RO/RO, so we didn't get a lot of time in port. I preferred Keelung to Kaoshiung in a heartbeat. It really had the feel of what one thinks of as being a foreign port. It is hard to pick a favorite. I was probably most familiar with Manila since I spent so much time there and was there quite a few times. Bugo, down on Mindanao was VERY interesting and very rustic, back in the day. It may well still be, but I am sure that some capital improvements have been made since the late 70s.

Oh man, Kaohsiung was POLLUTED and it stunk to high heavens.. There was a lot of oil in the water that came from ship breakers down in the south harbor. There was a story going around way back when, that a crew member from a ship had thrown a lighted match in the water and lit the harbor on fire. I think it was just an ‘urban legend’. I used to try and refrain from taking ballast there when I sailed Chief Mate at APL; but sometime, depending on the cargo load out, I had to do it. I can’t tell you how many times I saw dead livestock (pigs mostly) floating next to the ship. I can only imagine what ended up in the condenser. A lot of times the engineers didn't need to imagine.

I never got to Kaohshiung as a cadet. The schoolship avoided the place like the plague. The first time I was there was in the late 70’s as a young 3rd Mate. The bars around WuFu 4th and QiXian 3rd Roads were really jumping back then. Places like Snow’s, Susan’s, the New York Bar, Tiger Bar and the Cape of Good Hope Bar, were crawling with sailors; their pockets ‘filled with personality’.

Yeah, I guess I better not tell the story about the 1st Engineer, the bar girl and the elevator at Snow’s club..

Fong came on the scene in the late 80’s. Who could forget that rickety old cab of his. He was a VERY shady character (amongst many shady characters in that port). I didn’t trust him any further than I could throw him. As a matter of fact he had been banded from boarding a couple of the APL C-10’s for ripping off crew members. I heard that he has since passed away.

I remember sitting in Wu’s dumpling restaurant and having the cook drag in a small live crocodile to be butchered in the kitchen.. That was kind of exciting. Hey KPEngineer, did you ever have the ‘thousand year old’ eggs in Kaohsiung? I tried one once and nearly gagged.

Enough reminiscing...

As far as places to eat on Long Island, I liked Bertucci's Brick Oven Restaurant on Merrick Avenue in Westbury. It’s near the Westbury Shopping Center. It was good Italian food and as I recall the prices were reasonable.[/FONT]

Borelli's

Bertucci's is a chain ... and although it's OK, it's not authentic Italian ... a better choice for Italian, in the same general area, would be Borrelli's on the south side of Hempstead Tpke., just east of the Meadowbrook Parkway.

Yeah, I think I've eaten at Borrelli's too.. It's the place over just east of the Nassau Coliseum, right? As I recall it was also reasonable and the food was good. Another place that I liked and was a favorite with my son and his KP rugby teammates was Croxley's Ale House in Franklin Square. His first class year he spent a few 'wings and beer Wednesdays' there.. However, it might not be the best place to take your kid on Plebe/Parent Weekend. I'd save that one for Grad week. :thumb:

Favorite Italian - Family Owned

MARIO'S in Great Neck. Hang out for DD. Also a good Japanese is across the street in the small mall...sorry don't know the name. Before you
get to the grocery store.
