Im entering my senior year this year. And I am getting my braces off (FINALLY) in 2 weeks.

And my orthodontist is giving me the option of having removable or a built-in one on the bottom. The top needs to be a removable one.

But he said I would need to wear retainers for 2 years

So I would like to know what the Acadmy's view on having either type of retainer..or if they allow them at all

I believe Larry Mullen answered this one before and that the answer was that retainers were permitted. However, you might want to search the DODMERB board and/or post a message there. This is one question that I believe he is permitted to answer without a private email.

My son is a current plebe, class of 2014. On our second phone call sunday, he said that at his dental checkup, they asked if he had a retainer. He said yes and they suggested we bring it up during PPW. They said he should still be wearing it. It is obviously a removable retainer. I have no idea what the policy is on a permanent retainer.

From the title of this thread, I though perhaps we had gone back in time 100 years and someone was asking if they could bring their personal servants (butler, steward, etc.) to USNA.

Yes, you can have a permanent one put in the bottom, where there's just a thin strip of metal behind the row of teeth or even the other type. And yes, you can have a removable retainer for the top.

On my DoDMERB remedial paperwork it said that all retainers were permissible.

thanks for the replies everyone!

I also contacted dodmerb, and they said that removable retainers are allowed, and that permanent ones are reviewed on a case by case basis....
