ROTC and Academics

Good evening!

I just had a question regarding academics. I'm an electrical engineering major, and a 2nd year at my college as well as AS200 in ROTC. This semester, I haven't been doing great in all my classes. I will definitely pass them, but my GPA will take a HUGE hit. My current cumulative is a 3.6, and I overloaded myself with a lot of classes because I wanted to graduate in 4 but I recently changed it to 5 so it should be much better after this semester.

I was just wondering, what would be a "good" GPA with ROTC? I mean, I know GPA won't factor in much unless I go rated but I am talking about finding a job after I am out. The minimum to commission would probably be somewhere around a 2.75 I'm guessing but how would that compete once you are no longer active duty?

Although time management has been hard, I do blame myself for taking a lot of time to myself when I could have been studying. I could've probably pulled a really decent GPA, somewhere along the lines of a 3.3 or so but I might be stuck with a 2.75-3.00 for this semester.

Thoughts?

The importance of your GPA will decrease the longer you are out of college and the more work experience you gain.

I know things have changed but I've never been asked my GPA from a potential employer...or what my SAT scores were...ever.

GPA has not come up once since I left service for employment. It can come into play for grad education.

There are also such tricks as only including your major GPA on your resume. If they ask about the cum GPA tell them, explain it, and show how you've learned. There are a lot of other things an employer should bee looking at also.

Idk how you'll get selected for field training, yet my school has a huge detachment very competitive. Summer classes help

Well, once you are done with your commission, I doubt your GPA will matter to any employers outside of the military unless you want to try to go to graduate school or something along those lines. Try to keep it as high as possible in undergrad if you want active duty, though. I'm not sure which service's ROTC program you are in, but I know that for the Army ROTC in 2016 the average GPA of the active duty cohort was 3.4 and the Air Force/Navy ROTC is probably similar.

Air Force and NROTC always go active duty. I expect you know that but didn't want novice readers to misinterpret your statement.

I actually had no idea that all Air Force and Navy cadets went to active duty! The school I am going to next fall only offers Army ROTC, so that's all I ever looked into. Thank you for the info!

I thought that Air Force is now offering reserves? And didn't the Air Force force some to go reserves a couple of years ago? Please let me know if this is not correct anymore.

I think you're correct that there was a change in this regard recently. I don't know how it works or if the cadet gets a choice in the matter. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable with AFROTC will post.
