A friend/faculty member who is very close to the situation thinks it is more about Faculty opposition to his decision making - like pushing raises to women and minorities who were not being paid on a par with the rest of the faculty. The more established profs want to be in control of the institution. I saw how this works only too well where I teach, a couple of years prior to me teaching, I was a member of their Board of Visitors and had a front row seat to shenanigans where the faculty brought down a provost and then two yrs later another provost. NOTE: Faculty were part of the decision makers who brought in both provosts. Then, they second guessed decisions time after time. When my wife was Department Chair, the professors in the department could veto her decisions and it took great efforts for her to literally get anything done.
By the way, my friend on the scene saw the margarita machine and it was NOT in the President's Office and what they're calling working hours are after 5 at a place where most of the staff comes and goes at odd hours because of evening events, etc.
And now the Admiral has left the building and cut short hos tour by at least a year. Probably right to retirement.
