    I'm a little depressed.

I was able to get my CR to a 620
but my math score is still only a 580.
it's my fourth time taking it.
I'm a senior, and I don't really know what step to take from here. I'm taking the ACT this Saturday...

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Is it worth it to take the SAT again?

    thank you.

Still waiting for my scores... I think they'll be delayed because I took it outside of the US. My heart is beating quite hard right now! I'm taking the ACT this saturday as well!:thumb:

I'm kind of pissed off too. I felt like I did considerably better than last time. CR dropped from 600 to 590, math 760 to 680, writing stayed at 580 with essay score of 4 instead of 6 I got last time. But multiple choice went from 63 to 66. Is it possible to order a score report to see which ones you missed and why like you can on the act?

    1. The academy super-scores; so even if a score goes down, they keep the higher scores. I know you were hoping for better scores, but at least you know that you can NEVER go down in scores.

    2. If you feel you've done your best with the SAT, then definitely take the ACT scores. Many find it an easier test. Also, if you've taken the ACT a few times, consider taking the SAT

    3. Other than paying a few dollars, it can never hurt you to take these tests as many times as you can.

Best of luck to everyone. mike...

Can we only send the test scores from either the SAT or ACT? Or can we send our best from both of the tests and have them choose which one they want?

You can send both. DS did and they took his ACT over his SAT.

Stephanie, definitely try the ACT which is also given in December. My DS had exactly the same SAT scores you have but did much better on the ACT (31E/30M/33R/31SR). This is fairly common. Many students do much better on one exam than the other exam. I am a math tutor for both exams and can't explain the difference other than the exams are very different in nature and some students really click on one and not so much on the other exam. As Pima said, there is NO downside to taking the exam as many times as you can other than a small financial investment.

How USAFA compare ACT & SAT?

    Hello Blackbird,
Then how USAFA compare ACT & SAT? They need a single scale to rank candidates. I know there are concordance table published by CollegeBoard and ACT. But what about {English|Reading} from ACT to SAT CR?
Do they convert ALL ACT to SAT? or vice versa SAT to ACT?

I don't know how the exams are converted at USAFA. Some universities, particularly in the South, convert all the SAT scores to the ACT scale while west coast and east coast colleges generally convert ACT scores to the SAT scale. I don't know what USAFA does to convert exam scores, but it doesn't matter. Trust them, they will take your best score. And yes, to compare the two exam scores use one of the many conversion tables available on the Internet.

Go to the USAFA website and they have a class profile posted that has average ACT and SAT scores. They seem to be in approximate agreement with the concordance tables. I believe ACT averages are about 30 in all subject areas.

an epiphany thanks to this forum..

Thank you all for the support. It's a little hard to stomach when you put so much effort, feel like you did better...and in all reality didn't improve much.

I did actually sign up for this Saturdays ACT. in the western states, it seems less popular...and that may be the reason I have not invested in this test over the SAT.

I am okay-ish in academics, top 10-12% and a gpa (unwtd 3.48) with a 5 AP class schedule, and my ecs are very very strong. I am hoping that I can raise these scores to bump my academic composite a little bit.

Since sophmore year, I turned my 2.8 gpa to a 3.48, my class rank from top 40% to top 10%, got active in clubs, academy summer seminars, varsity sports...to over a thousand volunteer and leadership hours...to gold awards and high scoring cfas.

I didn't change to increase my chances at going to an academy. I changed because I realized my goals were above just being "average". It was a reverse causation of sorts.

(kind of had an epiphany as I was typing this) All of this typing to say one thing:
I have worked to hard to fall short on this. If any academy or school is aware of my determination and effort, and still decides to reject me due to standardized testing...their loss. But I am not about to give up,failure is not an option:guns6:!

I really do appreciate the pep talk. One wild coaster ride for sure, and sometimes you need a little push to keep going. In the terms of cross country, it's a marathon, not a sprint.

    Thank you all!

Do we need to take the writing portion of the ACTs? Because it is optional.

Optional means optional. So take the Writing section or not. But other colleges, perhaps even your B plan school, do require it.

    Dagger,

I didn't realize you were AD and applying only to USAFA. I wouldn't be doing the ACT Writing section if I were in your place. And thanks for serving!!

    Don't worry Stephanie!

Happens to everybody. My son bolo'ed it too - really dropped his scores on this one - He's hating himself, but I told him that it happens to EVERYBODY once in a while. Especially after he got to bed at 2am coming back from an away game, then had to wake up at 5am for the hour ride to the test site...

He's still got decent superscores and he's taking the ACT tomorrow too (got another away game tonight but it's pretty close and the test is at his school). I always tell him dealing with success is much easier than dealing with adversity and his response to situations like this is a much better reflection of his character than getting a 50 point increase...

    Good Luck and Best!

Hey Stephanie! I just want to encourage you even more. I'm from CA also, graduated last year. Right now I'm a sponsored Falcon Foundation prep at New Mexico Military Institute.

Your determination is so impressive! I wish I'd had that drive in high school earlier than I did. Maybe I wouldn't be at a prep school right now and would instead be at the Zoo. But hey, maybe this is the year!

KEep your head up! Your determination is everything the Academy is looking for. And if they have some issues with your scores or GPA, hey, nothing wrong with a year at prep school like me. It gets to be a drag sometimes, knowing that I missed getting an appointment by less than 100 spots, but it's also nice to know they take me seriously and expect me to be there next year. Hope to see you there as well :thumb:

    From the USAFA website:

Note: If you took the ACT test after January 2005, it is highly recommended that you take the (optional) writing test. USAFA will accept your score without that portion of the test.

They highly recommend you taking it. You might want to consider that. Good Luck! Thanks for your service. :thumb:
