My daughter FINALLY committed to her school of choice tonight and we paid the deposit. (She is a 4-year scholarship winner.). My husband thinks the scholarship should have covered the deposit, but I don't see how since there is no mechanism for the Army to pay the deposit and I've not seen anything on the scholarship website that notes the procedure for having a university deposit paid. Did I miss something? Thank you.

When I got the NROTC - MO scholarship last year, I had to pay the deposit to Virginia Tech. I never got around to using the scholarship because I went to USNA instead (I was holding on to my spot at Vtech in case anything happened before I Day (injury, etc). My mom canceled my spot when I walked onto the Yard on IDay. We lost the deposit but we agreed it was worth the loss, just in case.

Not exactly sure what the deposit was for, but in my experience with college kids, its typically a room and board deposit. She will have the chance to choose tuition and fees or room and board. She will not begin collecting any money until after she contracts, which happens after they all arrive at school, fill out paperwork, take the ACFT, sign the contract etc. She will also have had to made it all the way through the DoDMERB process and be medically cleared. The contract does not begin until everything is signed and submitted by the BTN. That is the effective day of her payments. Tuition payments will not arrive for several weeks after the final class drop date for the school. My son contracted in early September and his tuition and fees payment did not arrive until approximately 2 months later. Just be prepared that nothing happens too quickly with payments. He did get his monthly cadet stipend back dated to the Signing date in September, but it does not go back to the first day they report for school/ROTC and arrived in his checking account around the same timeframe. She can of course direct any questions to her ROO officer. Welcome to AROTC!

The NROTC scholarship pays either tuition or room and board plus all required fees imposed by the school on full time undergrad students, which I believe covers the deposit. It may be different for Army or AF but worth an ask.

If it is covered, it would likely be paid directly to the school and the account credited at some point in the future. I wouldn't expect a check from the Army to come to your DD. If the deposit was for room and board, then it is likely not covered. That is the only deposit I remember paying for DS this time of year was for room and board, but every school could be different.

As your DD has not yet contracted, then fees paid before the contract likely won't be covered because the military doesn't pay until the contract is signed.

The scholarship doesn’t pay for everything. It’s not a full ride as I was erroneously thinking when my DD received it four years ago. Everything EJF said is accurate. Be prepared to budget because every single contracted cadet hast to fill out a form, which I believe is a 104R, and have that turned in asap. Once that’s done it can take weeks, months even for the money to be deposited into their account. My DD chose to use her money for room and board as that is more expensive than the tuition at her school.

They will get a $600 for books and supplies at the beginning of the semester and a $200 stipend every 2 weeks. When DD started in 2030 they were getting 10k a year but it was bumped up to 12k this year.

Just as an example, spring semester started in January and they received their 6k on the last day of March. That was a close call and of course we, as parents help when we can but it sure is frustrating. I wonder if the Navy is the same way. Either way we will be prepared this time around with DS.

The Navy is the same way. Housing $$ comes about 90 days after the start of the semester (his tuition is covered). We bankrolled him the first few years. Now, as a Junior, we request that he save enough to get himself until the bag of $ drops. It’s each semester. Of course, we’ll bankroll it, if needed, but this is great practice for real world living …..

(“We’ll help out/cover things if there is an emergency, but not because you ate at Chipotle every night & golfed 5x per week.” That’s our reasoning because we’re at home pinching pennies so we can help them out at much as possible - not eating out & playing golf 😉.)

The NROTC scholarship specifically states it does not cover fees. It is up to the school to waive the fee if they choose because of the scholarship. My DD’s fees were waived. Both tuition deposit and housing.
