It's been said many times on this forum that prep school offers go to those who usually need academic improvement, usually prior enlisted and athletes and other desirable candidates who fell short of academic standards for appointment.

What about Falcon offers? Is there a difference in the type of candidate who receives one or do they also need an academic boost? In other words, would a candidate who has a high GPA and test scores still be in the running for a Falcon if they didn't get an appointment?

Short answer, yes, a high GPA and test score candidate can receive the FF offer. I don’t know what all goes into Falcon Foundation Scholarship selection, but DS was offered one in July while he was at WP BCT. While DS is not the highest of candidates I’ve seen, he was certainly well above needing that offer for academic prep. I will add that he did not have a nomination to USAFA, and can only speculate that the FF offer was made because they wanted him and that was their way to get him at that point for the following years class. Being extremely late in the admissions process, they must’ve had a couple remaining slots to fill. They called our house and did say he would have to accept or decline almost on the spot.

Is it true that you need a nomination to be considered for USAFA prep school? My liaison officer had told me this a couple of weeks ago and I’m not sure this is correct.

I could use elaboration on this point. In general, will a prep academy be of benefit to a candidate who is well qualified academically? Is college and AFROTC a better option for such a candidate?

My advice is that said candidate email their USAFA counselor and ask what their application was lacking. If it was test scores or CFA scores, maybe focus on a civilian prep school that will help them improve academically and physically.
Was said candidate not as involved in their community as the Academy expected them to be? Look into a college or AFROTC program where they will have opportunities to either participate clubs or partake in some type of leadership role.

Thanks. DS is waiting to hear from his counselor on that score. He is strong in all areas, but has no varsity letter. Good athlete and had a strong CFA, but is lacking that element.

The wait sure is rough. Are there generally FF Scholarships still offered this late in the process?

Yes. Falcon and prep school offers are usually given out in April and May after appointment offers although a few may be given out early.
