Son signed his USNA paperwork today and called AROTC PMS and told him he will decline the ARPTC scholarship and get the paperwork to Cadet Command in time for the March board. He's writing the letter today, we will fax, email, and fedex the letter. One more step in the process. PMS now can give son's OOS scholarship to 3 instate kids.

Too bad you don't live in CA anymore. That would mean our son would have a chance at this "up for grabs" scholarship, lol!

Congratulations to your son for making his final decision! :thumb:

    Sending back scholarship

Your son has made the right decision. First, because he giving someone else an opportunity. Secondly, and more importantly it shows he values, character and integrity, which has something to do with the way he was raised by Mom and Dad. He will do well at the Academy, be proud. Tell, him I say thanks for serving our country,

Not to rain on anyone's parade, BUT how many AROTC scholarships do you think will go unused this year? My understanding is that the ARMY (as well as the AF & Navy) awards more scholarships than they actually have available to allow for those people like Singaporemom's son that will not use them (for various reasons). How does returning the scholarship in a timely (now) manner benefit those that are still waiting for scholarships?

Son's scholarship will actually be used this year, since PMS at school is tapped out of funds. The same would be true if son denied the scholarship in the summer. But PMS would have had a harder time tracking down the kids during the summer. He also promised son a spot next year for a 3 yr on campus scholarship should things not work out.

Each campus has an "X" amount alloted to them. Once they've spent their money they are done. But, if you don't qualify, you will not get it. It sounds as if son's PMS is prowling around for the kids that are making changes so he can get the funds shifted to someone else.

I'm sure there are schools that do not get their spaces filled. You might get the scholarship but the school you want is full. Well, you're not outa luck, you just have to accept a different school.

Then when the schools and kids shift and filter and move around, some schools are full and some are not. Those that are not full will have the on campus money to give to those that qualify.:thumb:

singaporemom: Would you mind explaining the process for returning an Army ROTC Scholarship? I don't remember seeing a form that needs to be signed, but I could certainly have forgotten.

What do you mean give it to 3 in state kids? Does that mean 3 kids from your state, or 3 kids from your state going to your state's schools? And why is it 3 and not 1?

Also, it was my understanding that each school had a certain allotment of scholarships to give out. So if son puts down 5 schools he would like to use scholarship CC can come back and say he can only use it at 3 that they say he can, correct? Son called the school he will be attending and they told him they don't have a certain amount to give out, that it was the Army that would designate who receives scholarships and then student gets to use at any school they want. That doesn't sound correct to me. Can someone clarify these for me?

That is not correct for the Army scholarships. As evidenced on this board, CC can come back with only 1 choice or even say that a scholarship has been won but all the choices are full therefore you need to find a school a school that has openings.

If you do get a scholarship offer and the school you want doesn't have any scholarship slots left, then transferring the scholarship can not be done right now. A letter will come out in May asking if you are still going to the college of your intent and at that time you can request to use it at another school. It's not guaranteed at all.

In conversations with battalions it is clear that they get a $ allocation, not a scholarship allocation. For a public school with differences in in-state and OOS tuition (often around 3X) a PMS can literally give out 3 in-state scholarships or, for the same budget, 1 OOS. It is up to the PMS to decide how to do the allocation.

That is exactly what happened to me. During the last board, CC only offered the scholarship for 1 school. It was my third choice, Arizona State. But I will be taking it.

mariner116...correct! Son's Out of State tuition is 3x that of the instate tuition. PMS wanted son from the day of the interview, and told him so.) His big brother is also there). We really thought that that is where he'd end up.

aglages: I just re-read everything sent to son regarding the scholarship. There is nothing official to send in. If I remember correctly when my older son went through this, more paperwork comes later and you sign on the dotted line there or reject the scholarship.

PMS told my son to write/fax/email a letter to Cadet Command and CC him. Then he can push the declination through and get the funds for his other kids.

The vast majority of the kids will be getting their acceptances in March. They will be a lot of shifting and shuffling going on between now and August. The kids might not get on to their first choice school, they might not get into any of their schools....they might get into all of them. I think the horse trading will begin very soon.

Alot of these kids have more than 1 ROTC scholarship. Once they get into their schools and make that final decision alot of scholarships will be denied by the student. If my son didn;t get into USNA, he would be waiting until march to hear back from his schools and then releasing 2 of the rotc scholarships. It's just the way the process works. By summer, things will settle down, that's why they give the kids until May to commit officially. Don't give up something you are not yet sure about. This is a huge decision.

My son will be attending NGCSU. Although he is out of state, he receives in state tution if he is part of Corps of Cadet. :thumb: During his interview there (campus interview, not scholarship interview, that was done at our local college) he was told that they have 70 scholarships to give out and that they could pretty much guarantee him one since they don't have that many applicants for them!!! I understand now how 1 scholarship can equal 3.
