Hi,

I applied to Norwich and The Citadel a week ago (And the AROTC scholarship for 1st board). I'm really nervous because it looks like I'm going to get a C+ in honors calculus, which I have really struggled in. I don't have any other C's and have not in the past. Is this going to ruin my chances of getting into these schools? Will they consider that honors calculus is a difficult course? I've tried to get my grade up but can't, and I'm very upset and nervous about.
Thanks for any help.

DD had a C (83 when 84 needed for B at her school) in Calculus last year and she was accepted to The Citadel back in September. Thankfully it was not a huge hit to her GPA since she has always maintained A's. They look at strength of classes you take and factor that in. No one knows how they make decisions but I would say if you have strong test scores and grades otherwise you should be fine.

Thanks for your insight. This grade is making me very anxious and I appreciate your help. I hope it won't affect their admissions decisions and everything turns out okay.

I understand completely the anxiousness. DD is still very worried about it having a negative affect on her AROTC scholarship and SA applications, but she can't change it at this point so she is focusing on what she can continue to improve on (test scores and 7th semester grades). Hang in there!

in the case of Norwich if you have already applied future grades have no impact.
they use the transcript already submitted. Same with ROTC.
if accepted you just need to graduate.
you will take an on line math placement test. that will determine where you will start math wise.

My DS is taking trig this year...not calculus. With that being said, he is thrilled to have received his acceptance to Citadel. He goes to a very competitive all boys school. Besides the calculus he has a great resume, physics, etc. Remember they look at the whole package...good luck!

For the candidate asking the question, I think you will be fine. You will be selected based on your six semester transcript. If you are in Honors Calculus as the class listed on the your current program, you will be in a good place--especially for Norwich and El Cid if you have SAT math scores that are strong. No one will see your quarter grades, so don't worry.
However, for parents whose sons and daughters have heard from admissions...about how many weeks/months did it take to hear--and was it in regular mail or via the application portal? The senior in high school at my house has been completing his applications--and I am curious if we will really have to wait until 1 April or something like that.

My DS heard about 5 weeks after he applied to Citadel. He receive a big envelope in the mail and opened it before we got home. Exciting times!

Congrats to all who already received an acceptance letter! And thank you for calming my nerves a little bit. The application process and waiting for a decision is a very stressful time!

I think I am more stressed going through this with my DD than I was going through it myself! I have to remember to thank my parents because now I know what they were probably feeling :)

Good Afternoon All...Just wanted to close the gap that my high school senior received his El Cid acceptance last night--it was a two week turn around time. They must be cranking through the applications. Now he must finish his other applications...and ROTC scholarship packets. Such a busy time of year for them.

Last year my son heard back from Norwich in less than two weeks.
If your stats are above a certain level you should hear back quickly.

Got accepted to the Citadel yesterday! It took less than two weeks. However, I applied and sent my transcript to Norwich on the 24th, but I haven't heard back from them yet. Is this unusual? Should I email my admissions counselor to confirm that they got all my materials?

Yes, email or call. They are very helpful.
They (Norwich Admissions) split it up by state, some states get more applicants than others.

I emailed my Norwich counselor and it turns out they never received my transcript. Now, I emailed my guidance counselor and he isn't replying. So frustrating, I've been waiting for a decision and they haven't even received my transcript. I worry this puts me in a bad position because I applied weeks ago and it's rolling admissions so it's better to apply early.

Congratulations Cadet257! Each school is different. Don't worry that you are late in game for admissions anywhere...it is November...many students will not get their act together until the Christmas holidays. Great job checking on the transcript. Unless El Cid and Norwich are your only two dream schools, you are not done yet. Have you applied to any other ROTC? You might spend time applying Marine Option or Navy--the deadline for AF ROTC is 1 December, so you would be cutting it close--but the Navy ROTC would be a breeze--if you completed the Army ROTC packet already and with you already having reached honors calculus in high school, that might make Navy ROTC a great option for you. Good luck in the weeks ahead. I think you and my guy were atypically quick with the Citadel admissions acceptance letters. Two week turnaround is definitely not the norm.

Thank you for the support! I am not applying to other ROTC scholarships- Army is definitely the branch for me! I am going to apply to VMI and Virginia Tech along with same state schools in my area. The Citadel was definitely a fast response! Just frustrated that I'll have to wait longer for Norwich, but hopefully my transcript situation will get sorted out soon.
