For all appointees (current or past) who has completed the Standard Form 86 (Security Clearance). I was wondering if there is a method to filling it out that is most recommended. So far my main issue is that when attempting to save the interactive PDF, it doesn’t save the info that I typed in unless I just print it then and there. With this document being over 100 pages, has anyone found a better way of doing this electronically. Because the only alternative that I am considering now is printing the entire form out and filling in by hand. Thank you for your time in reading this and any replies to help guide this appointee as well as others.

Spit-balling here, because I work with a lot of fillable documents, manipulating back and forth from laptop to workflow and project management sites on my company intranet.

Save a blank copy to your desktop.
Fill it out there.
Save it as something like SF 86 MY NAME DATE

Upload it.

Are you using Explorer? Govt systems sometimes like that better than Chrome, Mozilla, etc.

I've been using Adobe Acrobat Reader DC. You can save and edit the entire form

Yes! This is what I have on my personal laptop - Edit, e-sign, everything, very handy. I have the full Adobe suite on my biz laptop and family desktop, and the app on my iPhone and iPad for editable scans. You do need a pdf reader if you save to laptop or other device or portable drive. I am so used to having it, I don’t think about it.

Do they not use the e-quip system?
I’ve applied for two clearances now, and both times we submitted all the info electronically via equip. They send you the SF86 now to get you thinking about all that information, so that when they put everyone in the computer lab during BCT, you have the required information readily available. Another option instead of printing out all 100 pages would be to just print out the pages with info you can’t recall from memory. If the page is blank, or has info you know firsthand, then it shouldn’t be a problem to submit the electronic application without a paper copy of those pages on your person.
