Should I just rescind USNA Application?

DD in same boat. Time running out quick. Is April 15th the "point of no return" for notification, or is it April 1st? Looking forward to the process being over! DD thought about rescinding just to get on with planning.

As a BGO, last May one of my applicants got an offer 2.5 weeks before IDay. This is not the norm by any means but as one commented above, you are in, until you are out.

Personally, I would like to hear what happens when you press that "rescind" button. Do they give you a second-chance pop-up window that asks "are you sure?" or is it just one and done? My DS was scared to death of that button and always steered well clear of that part of the page.

There is never any reason not to move on with planning. DS was able to execute his backup plan when he didn't receive his notification that he was not awarded an NROTC scholarship until April 15. Have the plan ready and you will have plenty of time to execute. Schools don't normally need a reply to their acceptance until May 1.

@THParent DD may try it tonight, so stand by for info :)

They give you a second chance button. I had to rescind my application for the USAFA in December. I pressed the button then it prompted me to a page that was like “last chance” then once I pressed the button it was official that I was no longer in consideration for admission.

What I don't understand is if an admissions committee already reviewed an application and passed it over, and it's this late in the process, why not just inform that candidate? Makes no sense to prolong the agony.

They are not needlessly prolonging the agony. I think there is one committee that scores it and another awards appointments. Its not just a matter of having the applicants application complete and scored, all the other folks on the slate must also be complete and scored. You need all the data before you award an appointment.

Last year my DS received his USAFA appointment in January. He only got one nomination to his first choice (USAFA). He didn’t get a congressional nomination for USNA and was notified he was added to a “waitlist” there. He rescinded his app at USNA but later in the mail he received a letter from the VP with a nomination. So-it IS possible to get a VP nom. Hang in there.

Is there ever an instance where someone is not notified that they're not getting an appointment? Seems a lot of applications are sitting in limbo for so long.

Yes, when it's clear to admissions that they will not be receiving an appointment. Until then it's possible to receive an appointment.

Many appointments were awarded before the nominations and applications closed, many time all the data is not there.

Yes. And I bet those had a Presidential nom or some other nom with an LOA, so they actually did have all the data in those cases. Nominations are not all given at the same time. Just trust that they dont needlessly inflict mental anguish. They wouldn't do that to their kids, and they won't do it to yours. I would suggest patience.

So, if you aren't notified by 4/15, just take it as you're not getting in? Seems wrong after all these young men and women have gone through during this process.

I understand how tough it is to wait, especially when others are posting their Appointments, but the stress is largely self induced. USNA's objective is clear ...:"Most" will be notified by April 15." That means that some won't ...and there is usually a good reason. What it means is that you are still in the running. It's a competition, some will win, and some will not.

I have met and spoken to several of the Admissions officers over the years, and they understand what the Applicants go through. In fact, many of them are grads , and went through the process themselves 8-10 years before. That said, I am sure their focus is going through the proven process, and fielding the best possible class, rather than the making individual candidates feel good. They are also committed to meeting the April 15 deadline, and bust their a$$ to do so.

I knew of someone that was notified April 30th... don't give up until your portal tells you that you need to consider optional plans and try again next year...

A VP nom! I'm happy to hear is does exist. I was starting to think it was similar to catching a unicorn. My DS is in the position of having an LOA with no nomination, so his last hope is VP nom. However, going through the USNA appointment posts for the last 8 years, there have been ZERO listed as getting the VP nom. I know this forum is just a small sample (15ish%), but USAFA has shown 6 VP noms and USMA has shown 3 VP noms over the same 8 years, so I was starting to think USNA didn't use it.

Yes, the VP Nom exists. It has been posted here before (and my recollection it was from of one of the fairly reliable sources), that Candidates do not always know what Nominating source they have been charged to. For example, if someone had a MOC nom, but didn't win their slate but was still a great candidate, they may get the VP nom , but think it was charged to their MOC.

Both are true, but it happens each year. I know guys who got in on a VP nom.

Didn't receive a nomination from my senators/congressman. I did apply for the VP nomination, but realistically there's nearly a zero percent chance that I get that. I know that I qualify for the NAPS pool, however I'm not a D1 athlete, and I'm also a college applicant. Should I just rescind my application? It says "Complete Pending Review" but I'm confident they've already seen my application, and since there are people currently being admitted on a daily basis, I believe my chances are completely shot.
are you in an ROTC program? there is an extra nomination avenue there

If you really want USNA, don’t give up. Just as there are many paths to a commission, there are also many paths to an SA appointment. DS had applied to USAFA, had no NOM, and received a TWE. They then called him in July to offer him a Falcon Foundation scholarship (a year of prep school, but a golden ticket for the next years class). He was academically qualified and competitive, not a recruited athlete, and had no Nomination. One can only speculate as to the reasoning in making the offer.
While it is not the same SA, it just shows an example of the rare occurrences that do happen and should encourage people to never give up the fight!
Having said that, always have your backup plans in order and ready to execute. Hopefully if your desire is to commission and serve in the Navy, you will enroll in NROTC if you haven’t already. You can then reapply next year (if you still desire USNA) and have an additional Nomination source.
