Hi! I'm currently a high school junior and I have recently taken my PSAT. I want to know what sort of PSAT scores make the cut for SLS requirements. In addition to that, I'd also like to know what else the USMA looks for when it comes to accepting juniors like myself into SLS?

    Thanks,
    An

My son applied to SLS last year the first day the window opened - December 16. He received an acceptance letter a few days later dated Dec 17. I will say, that compared to AF's SS, the applications for Army and Navy were much more "bubble" oriented. For example - Varsity sport - yes/no, community service - yes/no. After each section (academics, extracurriculars), you had (I think) 2000 characters in which you could fill in any additional information. He filled in all the space he had to add in anything that didn't fit in somewhere else. (AF's application, incidentally, was more of a "submit your resume" type).

My son's PSAT scores were not that great - 197 total (so each section in the 60 mid/high range). But he did have his ACT scores from freshman year, when he got a 31, so I'm not sure which they weighted more heavily. I think class rank and GPA would also weigh pretty equally up there with the test scores. I don't believe the sports/EC's are as important as they are for getting into the academy itself, but think you'd have to at least show some athletics and leadership.

Don't worry about your PSAT scores - just apply if you want to go.

My son was in week 2 and very disappointed that they couldn't do much of anything. And moreso that it was just a complete cluster that day. No one knew what was going on, there were no contingency plans - basically they had the kids going back and forth changing uniforms trying to decide what they were going to do before finally giving up and just telling them to hang in the barracks and eat MRE's. Now, not that that isn't good practice for Beast, but still!

On that note, he was far more impressed with the AF and Navy summer seminars than West Point's overall. Much to the dismay of his dad and I (both WP grads) who were hoping it might convince him he wanted to go there instead. Turned out that he came home and decided he wasn't even going to complete his WP application.
