Hello! My DS has been offered multiple ROTC scholarships, including one for Space Force. This is all so foreign to us and just wondering what experiences anyone has with this? I think (not entirely sure) that up until this point Air Force ROTC or academy grads would decide on their path and might decide to try for this path (it's very competitive). My DS is told his path is set and after sophomore year he will automatically go into a "job" that is within Space Force. I feel like I am rambling but I would just like to know if anyone has any insight?

US Space Force is a NEW, unique, and quite a tight group. Really BIG brains doing really smart stuff, in very limited locations but of course, do not rule out future expansion. The Big Air Force has moved most of its rocket and all of its space, satellite technology to Space Force. If your DS is into Engineering, especially Aeronautical, then Space Force may be for you. At least you know where you are going after graduation and commissioning.
  • Buckley AFB, Colorado.
  • Peterson AFB, Colorado.
  • Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station, Colorado.
  • Los Angeles, California.
  • Schriever AFB, Colorado.
  • Vandenberg AFB, California.
  • Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida.
  • Patrick AFB, Florida.
If you are at Cape Canaveral or Patrick you will work side by side with SpaceX, which is cool for post Air Force, private opportunities. In Los Angeles, you will have the opportunity to work with the JPL.

They've actually already changed Vandenberg and Cape Canaveral to Space Force Base nomenclature for the launch areas.

Most of our launches (NASA) are handled out of those two places, and the Space Force groups there are an integral part of our launch teams.

Thank you for sharing. My son will be going to the academy doing Astro, and this is the path he is interested in. Of course things can change, but it’s great seeing the details laid out.

I’m AD Space Force. I was part of the first group to transfer from Air Force in 2020. There has been lots of change and much more expected as the new service continues to figure out how it is going to do things. The big thing about folks commissioning in to Space Force is that career fields for officers are quite limited. Right now, the options are 13S - Space Operations, 14N - Intelligence, 17D - Cyber, 62E - Engineer and 63A - Acquisitions. I expect lots to change within the next 4 years so it may look quite different by the time anyone entering ROTC now commissions.

Feel free to reach out with specific questions either here or privately!

Excellent information! I will share this with my son and see if he wants to reach out. Were you ROTC or academy? Thanks!

Go Space Force!

I do NOT think The Space Force is a joke whatsoever. It is a serious military need.

But I do LOVE the show.

I’m an AF 62E at a joint AF/SF unit and work on some space stuff. Also open to questions.
