High Power Rifle Team
What about the rifle team? Anyone have any info on what you need to get on that team?
Are you talking Varsity Rifle, or some kind of club sport?
Varsity Rifle shoots air and .22 indoor at 25 yds or something.
I'm currently the Team Captain for the Academy's High Power Rifle Team. We shoot NRA and CMP matches, with our 'national' match being the Atlantic Fleet Forces Command and All-Navy matches in Dam Neck, VA. Last year we won Team Rifle, Team Pistol, and 6 of 9 "leg" medals.
Unlike Varsity Rifle, we're just a club sport. We shoot match-grade AR-15s, and occasionally M-14s and M1 Garands, at 200, 300, and 600 yds with iron sights. On an individual basis, we may go down to Quantico during the summer to shoot in some 1000 yd competitions (again, iron sights).
We're a small team, with a max of 20 shooters. Tryouts are competitive, as we had more than 60 show up last September, and could only take 8. Next year we'll only be able to take 5. Only 3/C and 4/C can tryout. Selection is based on a personal information sheet, and a standard course of fire, similar to what we shoot in matches, followed by meeting of all team members to decide who will make the team.
We're the only sport that competes against the "big navy" and can even win rifles at some of the bigger matches.

I apologize if I just hijacked this thread, but someone asked about rifle and I figured I'd chime in with what I know. Any questions, just PM me.
