Still in the game

DS is not a recruited athlete, in IL.

Word, welcome to our club! What is the difference between being a recruited athlete and getting blue chipped?

I am ignorantly surprised the recruited athletes are still waiting, I guess I just assumed that would all be locked down in the fall.

Not sure there is one, honestly I've let her take the reins on the application process.

They flew her up the late part of January and threw out the term "blue chip". Just got everything cleared w/ DODMRB about 10 days ago. I am learning as I go...

Apparently we're a little late to the party.

My father had a wonderful idea just now. He brought up that our district had no appointments. I said yeah, old news. He then asked what're the chances that the other nominees had not received a TWE? Very good question. How many can a Congressman nominate for one slot? I'd say at least or two have been voted off the island, which increases my chances.

NCAA's definition of a "recruited athlete."

A prospect is considered a recruited athlete if the college takes one of the following actions:

•If they provide the prospect with an official visit.
•If they have an off-campus contact with the prospect or the prospect’s parents or legal guardians.
•If they offer the prospect a National Letter of Intent or an athletic scholarship agreement.
•If they initiate a telephone conversation with the prospect or his parents or legal guardians more than one time.

A "blue chip" is a indicator on the file that (1) the sport in question would really like this candidate and (2) I have been told adds points to the WCS.

That being said, a slate is a slate and they still have to get a nomination and be ranked close enough for them to get to you.

A coach only has so many blue chips to use and the will support some files and blue chip others.

My son is a recruited athlete, I know the coach is supporting his application but I am not sure if he got a blue chip or not.

and now I have added another level of complexity to the process for you all to ponder... mimosa anyone?

The 2 athletes I know of in our state that were "recruited" athletes had official visits ... Not a CVW and were offered their appointments by February 1st .
Quite frankly , recruited athletes at Navy are handled very differently than at civilian division 1 schools given the complexity of the SA process. It is clear as mud

I agree and it is VERY painful to watch your DS/DD forgo early decision offers from other schools because USNA is their one and only #1. You teach an athlete to keep their eye on the ball and focus, well mine does not want to look at any of his other offers until he gets an answer. To him it is not loyal. Oye!

My DS's classmate, a recruited athlete, was offered an appointment to USNA back in February, which he turned down and signed a letter of intent to USAFA. How does admissions work for athletes, because his GPA was not stellar, his SAT's were not great and the highest math he had taken was Alg./Trig.? I'm ignorant of the whole recruited athlete thing, but I have three more sons that may benefit.

If your athlete is good enough at their sport and the coach wants them badly enough then , yes, they will overlook some less then stellar grades or scores . They still need to be in the ballpark; however, and that is why there are average test scores and GPA s posted on the website . Having said all that .... An athlete works incredibly hard at their sport and deserves to be rewarded . Some people think its not fair , but an athlete will tell you it is due to the fact that they have worked so hard . I see both sides ....

I don't think athletes at SAs should be given a grade pass as they are at civilian schools - they should be held to the same high standard as all applicants.

It also depends on the sport, the academy and the depth of the applicants within the year. DS is within the norm of all of the stats that I have seen (3.97 unweighted, AP & college classes, ACT 28-32 scores, lots of leadership & community service) on the boards, but we do not have ROTC in our area as well as a few other things.

Agreed Prepswimmon, My DS and his other classmate, who is still waiting for the BFE, are excellent students AND excellent athletes who work incredibly hard at BOTH school and at their sports year round. I don't think athletes deserve a pass on grades, especially at the SA's because almost every kid applying works incredibly hard at BOTH and then some.

We have to have something to discuss while we wait to hear about the upcoming BFE'S!

I totally understand what you are saying , but the SA's have chosen to participate in division 1 sports and as such need to fill the teams with athletes that can compete . I'm not saying they lower standards an exceptional amount and lower them for everybody . The Ivy League does the same thing .... They need to compete and have teams to fill so they will give the spot to a recruited athlete first . Is it fair ? I have 4 kids with very different talents ... My DS that is going to USNA was not a recruit , but my second child dd has been getting letters since fall of junior year and it will certainly help her enormously ... So I see both sides .

Currey ... Is you DS rowing in SaN Diego crew classic? My dd is traveling out there from CT .... She can't wait !!!

For those wondering if admissions sends out appointments state by state. Got this off of Admissions fb page:

Poster: Are appointments sent out state by state? Still waiting in Texas.

USNA Admissions: No, appointments are sent out as decisions are made. All students will be notified by April 15!

DS TWE is dated 3/18 postmarked 3/20 and arrived in NH 3/24 . I have a question for others who received TWE's : do your letters have some numbers above the date and do you happen to know what they might mean? I am still praying for those waiting my this Saturday bring BFE to you all .

Womp womp and prepswimmom

I am not saying it is fair , I'm just saying that is what they do .

Mjm the Ivy's are not paid for by the American Public. The SAs should not take athletes below school standards as they owe the public the best and brightest. The Ivy League can recruit all it wants as they are not a government institution.

I have been looking to this thread for comfort and knowledge for weeks now and this is my first time saying anything but I am just too excited not to. My DS received his BFE today!
