Still in the game

Thank you! I am so glad you guys are still with us as we continue the long walk to the evil black box!

Kayaker and prepswimmom, so sorry to hear about the ROTC stuff. What a horrible process...they insist the kids do it themselves but then at the same time don't give them the support they need to do it on their own.

No USNA mail in NE Oklahoma...

Anticipating news from Marine Option scholarship soon as well. Seeing possible movement there.

I'm praying for all of you who have not heard any news that this coming Saturday and Monday don't mirror last week. I hope if a wave of news comes it's BFE's and not TWE's!!! Last Saturday was a very sad day in our household.

No USNA news here in VA.

Learned this morning that DS's NROTC application has not been boarded because his recruiting officer misplaced part of DS's file. The issue has been on his portal all this time, but when DS contacted him about it (which he has been doing since February), the recruiter said he was working on it. He'll make it into the final board and end up on the scholarship waiting list at any of the 3 USNA alternatives he's considering (assuming he's awarded a scholarship). I've been beating up DS for not being assertive enough. Now I feel badly about not giving DS the benefit of the doubt. How is an 18 year old supposed to know how to deal with the situation? It was hard enough for me, a reforming helicopter parent, to figure out how to attack the problem. I can't even apologize for riding him by giving him large quantities of his favorite food, chocolate. He gave it up for Lent.

Blessings to all who are playing a different game and to those still in it!

kayaker - glad no news yet!!! Hope you make it over the weekend - those seem to be the scariest days - Fri-Sat-Mon.

I totally sympathize with the ROTC glitch. DS contacted his recruiter - MO NROTC - over the summer with an application question (relating to school selection). Well, he gave DS the wrong answer (one he should have known), which caused a delay in September, which caused DS to not make it into the 1st board in November. DS pestered & followed up when the problem surfaced in September, recruiter said he was working on it but still no answer was forthcoming, so DS finally contacted CGO in FL in desperation and they gave him a clear answer immediately. I don't think it's too much to expect the recruiters to have the correct answers to basic questions. Sheesh. Trouble was, DS couldn't know at the time, way back in the summer, that the answer was wrong, and he proceeded based on that information.

I think moral of the story is as bad as these kids feel "making pests of themselves," they really do have to follow up aggressively, and don't assume everyone they are working with knows what's going on. Double-check everything. Trust but verify

ps - I don't think any of us - meaning everyone on this forum & our kids - had to give up anything for Lent - stalking the mailbox is enough penance!

I can commiserate with ROTC scholarship woes. I feel like they totally leave parents out of the process but don't give the applicants enough support (and on occasion drop the ball). DS has contacted his recruiter several times since November and never seems to get anywhere. I'm really not sure if DS is even being considered anymore :(
I hate getting on to him. He's had to jump through so many hoops in this process and I am so very proud of him for facing them head on with great maturity. It's certainly more than was expected of me at 17 or 18.

Thanks to all for continuing to stick it out with us on the island. Your support truly does help!

Still stalking in AR :)

AnxiousinAR,

glad you are still stalking!:thumb:

Before seeing these recent posts, I thought we were the only ones who had these ROTC troubles (no real problems with AROTC, tho) - I thought it must have just been bad luck of the draw with the specific recruiter...

Is your DS NROTC recruiter out of Frederick, MD?

Roseville,
That's funny. I thought the same thing :)

Thankful to still be stalking!

Roseville I like your Lenten thinking.

Very much appreciate the support as we wait.

Roseville, thanks for the chuckle about Lenten observances. Does this mean I don't have to keep drinking my coffee black (the Navy way?) until Easter?

Lofgren, I believe our recruiting officer is out of Richmond. Hard to tell with email and cell phones. We're in VA.

Shocked and saddened that the system fails so many talented and motivated kids. Perseverance seems to be the order of the day.

Vista123,

Thank you!

Can you believe it has been a YEAR since your last spring?

NO I cant. It started out worse than we anticipated and is ending up better than we could have imagined.

We are rooting for your ds here in the land o' lincoln.

Our DS had a completely different experience with his NROTC recruiter. The recruiter was on him night & day to get into the first round of application review. Said recruiter insisted on reviewing essay and activities involvement before DS submitted them. He made several suggestions and really helped the overall application. He'd say "tell me about your leadership in football." They he'd say "Well, you don't have it on your application like that!"

DS transferred what he learned from that recruiter when he tackled the USNA application. I believe it made the application better!

Just wanted to point out that there are some really good recruiters out there too!

Quiet in Tennessee today. Bob only brought us 3 thin white envelopes. None from the Navy.

Does anyone ever think that maybe the letter from the Academy is lost at some post office somewhere? At the beginning of the application process, the Academy should send applicants and parents a notice to begin getting in shape for the grueling months of February and March (and April?)

Were hunkering down tomorrow through Monday. Please don't let it be a repeat of what happened last week.

Good luck to all.
